“I’m not smashing anyone’s heart.” He wasn’t, was he? Were he and Alexis playing with fire?
“Well, that got awkward fast,” Kane said. “Wow, look at the paint job on this old Mustang.”
Chase walked over to confront Owen. “Are you and Alexis dating now?”
Owen cringed. “I don’t know if I would exactly call it that.”
“Oh, so you’re just toying with her. Lovely.”
“I’m not toying with Alexis,” Owen growled. “I wouldn’t do that.”
“What are you doing, then?”
“We’re just taking things slow.”
That seemed to calm Chase down. “I didn’t know you were capable of taking things slow.”
“That only happened once. And I’d had too much to drink that night. So I’m a human being. Sue me.” He didn’t like it that Chase knew so much of his past—every mistake he’d ever made. “All I can do is move forward, and I intend to treat Alexis with the respect she deserves.”
“You’d better. I don’t like it, but I can see that I can’t do anything to stop you from being with her.”
“Why would you want to if I’m standing here telling you that I’m going to treat her well?”
“Because she’s my baby sister.”
“I get that,” Benson said. “I’d take down any guy who messed with my sisters.”
“Your sister got married, though,” Chase said. “How did you deal with that?”
“I knew he was a good guy. She deserved happiness,” Benson said.
Chase scowled like he didn’t want to hear that answer.
“Eventually, you’re going to have to accept that Alexis deserves to be happy.”
“I accept that now,” Chase insisted. “I just don’t want her to be heartbroken.”
Owen needed a break from the conversation. He took off in a different direction from the rest of the guys. “I’ll be right back,” he called over his shoulder.
He saw a few older women standing around a gorgeous Cadillac. “Is this your car?”
“It’s my husband’s,” one of the women said. She wore a big, floppy, red hat and was dressed impeccably in a white pantsuit.
“I’m Owen.” He reached out a hand to shake their hands.
“Oh, we know who you are,” the woman with the red hat said. “You’re that movie star.”
“That’s right. I’m an actor.”
“We’ve seen you walking around with all your famous friends,” the second woman said. She put her hand out. “My name’s Sandra, by the way.”
He shook her hand. “It’s nice to meet you, Sandra. Do you have a car in the show too?”
“Oh, no. I’m just here to look around and mingle with folks.”
“It’s a nice day for it.”
“You all must be in town for the wedding,” the woman with the red hat said. “I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Catherine.”
