I don’t answer him. Luigi swallows slowly.

“I don’t like you being close to her,” he says.

“You left me here for four days. I can’t just stare at the walls. We’re housemates.”

I’m surprised he allows that attitude to slide. But he does. Luigi’s shoulders relax along with his tight jawline.

“I will no longer leave you alone with Angela then.”

Fuck.That’s not at all what I wanted, but I can’t show Luigi that he’s won even an inch over me. He reaches into his coat pocket and I fight back the urge to flinch before he does anything. The box he holds is much worse than a weapon.

“What is that?”

“An early detection pregnancy test. It’s been blessed by a priest.”

He doesn’t find anything weird about that, apparently.

“We had sex only a few days ago. I can’t be pregnant.”

His voice gets deep and husky, getting me frustratingly wet as I try to stuff my feelings and ignore both his content and tone.

“If I fucked you at the right time…” Luigi says crudely. “We could be well on our way to fulfilling the contract.”

“Why are you so eager to find out I’m pregnant?”

“If it’s negative, I’ll finish the job,” Luigi says coldly, but for a second, I detect a flicker of his true cravings behind his icy stare. The peek into his authentic desires scares me almost more than Luigi’s coldness. Why does it excite him to get me pregnant considering this situation?

“Perfect.”

“You’re getting money out of this,” he says with genuine frustration. “Protecting you is about to become my biggest problem and trust me, it’s a big one.”

“Is that my fault somehow?”

I shouldn’t push him. Luigi’s body stiffens and his face grows even colder than before. Pushing up against him just a little provokes such a strong reaction from him that regret and fear creep over me. His gaze flickers with knowledge of his complete control over me. That I’ll listen to him regardless of what he asks me to do.

“Go take the pregnancy test then return with the results.”

There’s no escape. It’s ridiculous to take the pregnancy test so early, but Luigi won’t allow me to exit past him. I want meatballs for lunch and an end to his cold-hearted bullying, so I snatch the pregnancy test from him and stomp into the bathroom, slamming the door behind me, defying him in the little ways I can.

Chapter Fifteen

Luigi

Ilisten outside the door for the sound of ripped packaging. She has to pee on it, and I hear her doing just that, getting really hard at the sound of her gushing into the bowl. I don’t burst the door open, despite my temptation. I set a timer for four minutes on my watch once her stream stops.

She’s quiet on the other side of the door, allowing time for my cock to soften, but my fantasies are already too wide awake for me to calm them down completely. I need to keep a clear head to talk to Delphine about what’s going to happen next and frankly, not all of our conversation will be arousing.

Our lives are about to get a lot more difficult around here. Dad called and he says a man from Pittsburgh landed in Buffalo. We don’t know which one of Carmine’s kids made the mistake of coming out here or what he wants. Good chance he just wants to run surveillance and test our vulnerabilities.

It’s not dad’s style to let something like that slide, even if anyone else might think surveillance during a truce doesn’t make a difference. He wants me, Mikey, and Peter to spend the next few weeks hitting up Italian clubs around the city, establishing a presence and scaring the fuck out of anyone who looks like they don’t belong in our city.

We might need more hands depending on what we find out, but if we’re lucky, we can discover which Italian breached our borders and send them back to Pittsburgh or easier yet, in the harbor with a brick around their ankle.

“Your four minutes are up,” I call out to Delphine. She takes her time getting to the door. Nearly another minute passes. When she opens the door, her face is nothing but pure distress.

“I fucking hate you.”

I can’t tell what draws her anger. Is she pregnant, or does she just not want to sleep with me again?
