Kenny was still chatting with Cal, so I squeezed his hand and smiled back at him before heading into the house. I’ve always loved this place. It’s got an open floor plan but is still cozy. Plus it’s right on the beach and has an amazing view of the ocean from every room on this floor.
I made my way to the kitchen, taking in the small changes Karen and Jeremy have brought to the house. It’s definitely more homey. Aside from the additional pictures and throw pillows, there’s a family vibe that wasn’t here before.
I’d just picked up a plate when Kenny walked through the patio doors and into the living room. He leaned down and kissed me.
“Your brother still hates me.”
I handed him the plate and picked up another one.
“He doesn’t hate you.”
“He still doesn’t trust me.”
We filled our plates and I pulled out a chair at the counter and Kenny did the same.
“In Dale’s defense, he neverreallygot to flex his big brother muscles with guys because by the time I started dating, he was away at college, then playing professional ball. And I’ve never been serious enough about anyone to introduce them to him.”
“Lucky me,” he said with a sarcastic chuckle and took a bite of his burger.
We ate in silence until both of our plates were practically cleared.
“You have to admit it’s getting better.”
“Yeah I guess it is. He asked me to join them for a cigar.”
I couldn’t hold back my smile at that.
“Really?” He nodded. “Dale is the one who asked? Not one of the other guys?”
“Dale is the one who asked.”
He popped the last bite of his burger into his mouth and chewed.
“You said you would, right? I mean, that’s kind of like an olive branch.”
“I’m aware.”
I finished eating then grabbed Kenny’s empty plate and stood. After rinsing and putting them in the dishwasher, I rounded the counter and wrapped my arms around his shoulders from behind and kissed his cheek.
“I’m going to swim with Jeremy and Lexi for a bit then hang with the girls. You go play nice with the boys.”
Kenny
I walkedonto the deck and settled into the chair next to Dale. He looked behind me.
“Where’s Penny?”
“She went downstairs to find a bathing suit so she can jump in the pool with the kids.”
“Jeremy really missed her. I guess we all did. ” He glanced in that direction then looked back at me. “We got spoiled with her being here.”
That’s the first time Dale included me in a comment about Penny so I guess he is mellowing.
“Yeah. Logically I knew the life of a ballplayer was hard on families, but experiencing it firsthand has been eye opening for sure.”
Jack stood and held out a box of cigars and I grabbed one and sat back as he handed me the lighter. They’re still enjoying theirs so at least I won’t be puffing alone.
Dale watched me light my cigar and raised his brow when I was done.
