“Oh, right. Well, then… I’m supposed to deliver these to you.”

He lifted several bags that came from different stores. Some were plastic, and others were paper, but there were a lot of them.

“What are they?”

“Clothes. They’re from a Mr. Easton Virgil. I was to shop and deliver them to you personally.”

“Hang on.”

I closed the door, slid the chain off, and opened the door fully. My heart hammered at Easton’s constant generosity. He didn’t have to buy me anything, but the fact he ignored my protests anddid these things for me anyway showed his love for me. I didn’t care what anyone said about him. Easton loved me—end of story.

“You can set them here on the floor.”

The man put the bags on the old, scarred hardwood floor and smiled politely. Then he handed me an envelope, which I took. “Is there anything else I can do for you?” he asked.

“Ah, no. Do I… need to tip you or anything? Do you even take tips?”

“No, sir. All my expenses have been taken care of.”

“Well, thanks.”

He gave me a curt bow. “Good evening.”

Then he was gone, rushing back to his car, no doubt.

“Who was that?” Annie asked, coming up behind me.

I shrugged. “Some dude dropping some purchases off from Easton.”

I opened the envelope and pulled out a white note card as Annie went through the bags.

You need new clothes.

XO

Easton

I snorted a laugh and shook my head as I traced a finger over theXandO. Even his notes said as little as he did.

“Wow, this bag is fromNordstrom. That store is super expensive. Hell, all these bags are from expensive stores. Easton sure does love to spend money on you.”

“It’s his love language.”

“Apparently. I want a boyfriend like that.”

“You’re only fifteen. Any boyfriend you find will be lucky to have fifty bucks from mowing lawns.”

“Ugh, truth.”

“Money isn’t everything, Annie Boo.”

“Sure, you can say that when you have a rich boyfriend.”

“I would love Easton just as much, even if he were poor. He’ll always protect me and be honest with me. Those things don’t cost money, but are priceless.”

Dad soon came out and inspected the bags with Annie. “Do you think he could lend us some money?”

And there went his class and manners. Jesus.
