“Where are they tonight?” I don’t believe I’ve seen them yet and Kennedy shrugs. “He called for her at the house, but I haven’t seen them. I’m guessing he wanted her to himself after the break. It would be nice knowing they’re on a date, but if I know River, that date is in his bed.”

Her lip curls in disgust. “One week can’t come soon enough for Autumn, Frankie. You may need a word with him before then because I’m guessing he’ll apply the pressure to bring her in line.”

“What if he decides to twist? Have you considered that?”

Frankie drops the option into the conversation and Kennedy shrugs. “Let’s hope he does. It would do her a favor.”

She turns to Amos. “We know what we’re doing, don’t we, honey?”

He nods, gazing lovingly into her eyes. “No doubt in my mind.”

He smiles and turns to Frankie. “I never thanked you for allowing me into that first challenge. I’m so grateful because it changed my life.”

His words tug at my heart as Frankie nods. “Happy to help.”

If anything, it raises a smile because Frankie’s intentions were strictly dishonorable when he set Kennedy up with Amos and it backfired on him spectacularly. He wanted to mess with her mind, but instead she got everything she wanted.

They move away and Frankie whispers, “I never saw that relationship coming.”

“If you had, you would have done your best to destroy it.”

“You have a bad opinion of me, baby girl.”

His wicked grin lights my soul and I say huskily, “Can we go now? It turns out I’m not such a party animal after all.”

“Give me a minute and I’ll be happy to.”

He nods toward Jesse and Imogen. “I just need a word with my friend.”

As we head across to them, my anxiety increases because I can already tell that Imogen is smitten with Jesse. I know her so well and recognize the signs and my heart sinks because Jesse is wrapped in complications and heading for a fall and the last thing I want is for him to drag my friend down with him.

FRANKIE

Cassie’s friend is a breath of fresh air in this place. It’s obvious she’s not the kind of girl who usually falls on Jesse’s dick. She wears innocence well and is wholesome and sweet. She looks like an angel and from what I heard, that extends inside as well. She is perfect girlfriend material, which concerns me because Jesse has developed particular tastes and would ruin her in seconds. The fuck I’m going to be on the receiving end of Cassie’s anger because of my friend’s actions and so, as we approach them, I let Cassie distract her friend and pull Jesse to one side.

“What are you playing at?”

My voice is low for his ears only, and he shrugs. “Chatting to Imogen. Why, what’s it to you?”

“Don’t you have somewhere else you need to be right now?”

Jesse’s reaction is interesting as a scowl settles on his face and he hisses, “Don’t remind me.”

“You gave me the impression you couldn’t wait to meet up with your biggest mistake. What’s changed?”

I refer to our earlier conversation and Jesse’s eyes flick to Imogen and he rakes his fingers through his hair. “I don’t know, man. If you’d asked me that an hour ago I would have been counting down the minutes but–”

He casts a longing look in Imogen’s direction and sighs.

“I suppose I’ve enjoyed an uncomplicated hour of conversation and I don’t remember the last time I did that.”

“With a girl that’s a piece of you. I saw it the moment I set eyes on her.”

He nods. “I’m conflicted, and I don’t know why.”

“You like her. Then again, you like every girl with a pulse. Why is Imogen different? You’ve known her for sixty minutes.”
