Prologue

WhatisDarkness?Isit the partial or total absence of light? Weakness or evil, corruption at its finest? My sins and my downfall can be aligned with the light.

She is that light, warm glow that just magically draws me in. So deep in the darkness, I had to wonder, can she pierce through all the slugged tar and make my once blackened world a beautiful night sky?

I am the darkness, where there is no light. The Messengers of Chaos took me in when my parents were slaughtered. They give me the names of those who plot their demise, and I end their worthless lives. There is no escaping this life of death and despair.

Kill them or you shall take their place were the words I used to hear when I would question their judgment. Many times I doubted their intentions behind the names they gave me.

Over the years, I began to grow weary of them. But as their greatest assassin, I am paid and ordered to do a job to which I shouldn’t question. If I ever find that their motives are not what they told me, they will all pay.

Trust me when I say, I enjoy the sport of killing. The thrill I get when I use my Kiss of Death, among other things, to end someone’s life is as much fun as the chase.

That is exactly what’s going on now. I’m being followed by someone that uses the shadows to hide behind. They are doing a lousy job at pretending to be the hunter, for that is what I am.

I hear rustling to my left. Whipping my head in the direction of the sound, I notice no one is there except some fallen leaves that are blowing in the wind. If only that were the case. I use my enhanced abilities to help me see and hear things no Human can, and I see the outline of someone who’s using magic to try and conceal themself from me.

I continue on as if I don’t see them matching my movements, trying to see when the hunter became the hunted. I laugh to myself because of the scent I catch in the air, it’s a woman. I’ll allow her to get as close as she thinks she can, but she won’t be able to subdue me. From her outline, she is a small, little thing and will not get the upper hand on my six-four frame.

Stopping dead in my tracks, I turn around to face her where she nearly bumps into me. I reach out and grab her around the throat.

“Why are you following me?” I ask her as she materializes before me, wheezing. I loosen my grip to allow her to answer.

“You know why I’m following you, the question is, do you know how long I’ve been doing so?” She smiles wickedly down at me.

“Who sent you?”

“Someone who is tired of you killing the wrong people. Don’t you know how many enemies you have?” She laughs. “I don’t see what the fuss about you is.”

“Tread carefully, girl, because your next words may be your last.” I tighten my grip on her throat, causing her to cease her laughing.

“Let me down!” She yells, kicking and screaming at me.

“I’ll let you down when I’m through with you.” I sneer. “I know I have enemies, do I care? No. Will I stop doing the job I was trained to do? Fuck no.” I laugh. “Now, tell me who sent you?””

“They prefer to remain anonymous, until the time is right. Do you know the truth about your parents’ death?” She chokes out. I release her at the mention of my parents.

“What do you know about my parents? Why should I trust anything you say?”

“You shouldn’t.” She says, lashing out at me with a knife I didn’t see in her hand a moment ago. It connects with my torso, cutting me deep. I do not falter as her eyes widen in surprise at the fact that the cut doesn’t faze me. “Why haven’t you fallen to the ground? That blade was laced with Wisteria flowers.”

“To say you’ve been following me, you should know all about me. Wisteria flowers won’t get the job done of killing or even harming me since I am not your average… Demon.” I laugh, grabbing her by her hair, pulling her neck in the direction of my waiting mouth. I haven't fed in awhile, and she’s looking really tasty right now.

“No, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to cut you.” She says in a rush.

“Too late for that. Tell me what you know, and I will make sure your death is a swift one, filled with pleasure.” I promise her and that has her crying, but it soon turns into laughter.

“Ha, ha, ha, it’s cute you think that you can kill me so easily.” She says, gathering her strength. Her eyes roll back for a split second before they land on me. Looking into her pitch-black orbs, I see fire swirling there. Momentarily stunned by the sudden change, I almost miss when she gathers fire within her tiny hands in an attempt to unleash the flames on me.

“We are not going to stand here and compare powers, before you can even use them against me, you’ll be dead.” I lean into her, pressing my lips to hers. I don’t bother to close my eyes as I watch the horror that replaces the wicked smile she had plastered on her face mere moments ago. Pulling back, I take some of her life away with that one kiss. “If you were truly after me as you claim, why do you not know this is what I’m known for?” I give her the chance to answer as she hangs on by a thread.

“No.” She moans.

“Yes. I was the one following you. I was the one sent to kill you, foolish girl. It’s funny you mention someone is out to get me, isn’t there always? Now tell me, who do you work for?” I growl, pulling her face closer to mine.

“I work for those who will bring down The Messengers for they have built an empire on lies!” She screams. “You can kill me, but we have many followers who will not rest until The Messengers have received their judgement and answered to all their unjustified murders.”

“I smell your fear, sweet girl, I wonder can you imagine how it will taste upon my lips as I drain you dry of your life essence?” I wait for an answer I know I’m not going to get. Shrugging after a beat, I continue on. “Would you like to know what it will taste like to me, sweet girl?” When she doesn’t answer again, I tell her exactly how it’s going to go before I swallow her pleasure, along with her life.
