As my father had often told me, everyone had a weakness. By discovering and exploiting them, one could rule the world. I noticed the single flicker of something very dark in his eyes, a memory that he quickly replaced with his usual insolence.

“Losses are but an opportunity for others to take advantage of. As much as I find myself thoroughly enjoying our banter and the desire we share, I will let you know that you’re in significant danger.”

I laughed. “If you’re talking about from you, we’ve already established that.”

“Not only from me. There are two substantive criminal organizations that could be working together, one or both responsible for your father’s death. The prize you had left on my doorstep is an indication you seek retaliation.”

“You noticed. Maybe you do have some intelligence behind that heavy dose of arrogance.”

“The people I’m talking about are true monsters.”

Exhaling, I gathered some sincerity in his voice. “Okay. Let’s just say you’re right. Why are you bothering to tell me this?”

“Because I think we can be of benefit to each other. If your territory is acquired by either the Turks or the Moroccans and especially if they are working together, they will have more opportunities in Europe to destroy everything both our fathers built. They won’t ask nicely.”

“You’re back to taking ownership of my father’s business while offering a pittance for it. As I said before, we’re finished with our conversation.” Before I had a chance to walk away, he grabbed my arm, pulling me close to his heated body.

“I’m not trying to hurt you nor am I going to offer you money. I’m suggesting an alliance.”

“With you?” I tried to jerk my arm free, but he dug his fingers into my skin.

“With me.”

“That’s not going to happen.”

He sighed. “I had a bad feeling you’d say that. Unfortunately, I can’t allow anyone to interfere with my business and both the Turks and the Moroccans are animals. They will burn down my world if they need to and they’ll do the same with yours.”

“I’ll take my chances.”

“No, you will not.”

“You can’t force me to work with you, Jago. That’s not how the world works. I’ll take you to court if you attempt to continue threatening me.”

He chuckled and dropped his head until he was able to nuzzle against my neck. His hot breath was like a firecracker popping under my skin. I was instantly electrified, staggered by the effect he had on me.

“That’s the problem, sweet Genevieve. You still believe that in this world right versus wrong applies. That’s simply not the case. It’s survival of the fittest, the strongest, and the most cunning. While I’ll give you credit in that you managed to surprise me notonce, but three times, you’re no match for me or anyone else in this world.”

“Fuck you.”

“Oh, little girl. Be careful what you ask for.”

“Damn you. Let me go or I’ll scream.” The man was infuriating, but the second he nipped my earlobe, I was forced to clamp my mouth shut as a moan was right there.

“I don’t think you’ll do that. In fact, I know you won’t. I want you to do me a favor and take a look to your right by the street.”

I turned my head, trying to figure out what I was looking at. Finally, after a group of people dispersed, I realized what he wanted me to see.

My heart instantly stopped. Marco was being led to a vehicle.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing? He’s a child. If you hurt him, I’ll kill you.”

“He’s not a child, but he is underage and I would very much enjoy having you try and kill me. I don’t plan on hurting Marco, but I will if necessary.”

“You fucking bastard.” I tried to break away, hoping Emiliano would detect something was wrong.

“And if you’re looking for one of your men, don’t think about it. That will force my hand,” he whispered, his voice alluring and sensual.

“What the hell do you want from me?” I was certain my chest was caving in on me.
