Climbing into his car, Alex tookhis time to make his way home. Before heading over to the clubhousehe’d done the unthinkable and kissed Sunshine. He’d not given herany explanation as to why he did what he did.He just kissed her, claiming her plump, dark lips for his own.
She probably deserved more of anexplanation rather thanfor him to kiss her.
After he talked with Sunshinehe’d go back to the clubhouse to spend Christmas day with them all.Tiny and Eva were throwing all caution to the wind as they delvedinto the festive season. All the women had been baking for the lasttwo weeks, to handthings out at the church along with the town center.Theywere making sure the town of Fort Wills was aware of them beingsorry and back in control.
Parking his car, Alex saw the sittingroom was aglow with light.
Entering the house, he shoutedout Sunshine’s name.He entered the house, and paused when he sawSunshine lying on her stomach.Blood pooled around herstomach, andtears were falling from her eyes.
“Sunshine,” he said, going to hisknees in front of her.He pulled out his cell phone about to dialfor an ambulance when the phone was slammed out of his hand.Someone punched him across the face making him fall away fromSunshine. She was still breathing but barely.
“You really thought youcould hide from us, fucker?”Alex didn’t recognize the voice as akick landed to his gut.
He rolled away, trying to get to hisfeet.
Suddenly, he was left alone asfootsteps entered the room.
Alex looked up at PrestonCooper.
“Hello, Alexander.”Prestoncrouched down until he was close to Alex.“It has been a long time.A very long time.”
“What the fuck are you doinghere?”Alex asked, staring at his past.
Preston smiled.“Imagine my surprise whenI heard you’d moved on from the casino to Fort Wills, Alex.We werefriends. You owe me, and I’ve come to collect.”
“I told you it was anaccident what happened to your sister—”
The other man gripped his jaw, hard.“Idon’t want to hear it, Alex.A life for a fucking life.Youpromised me the life of the man who killed my sister.Imagine mysurprise at discovering that very man was you?”
So many mistakes were catching up tohim.“How did you find out?”
“You were gone from thecity.Cops like to talk when you’re gone. You should learnthat.”
Preston shook his fingers at the manbehind him.“Give me the gun.”
Alex knelt on the floor as he stared athis past. The past that he’d long forgotten about with Tiny and TheSkulls at his back.He should have known Preston would come forhim. What had happened with Preston’s sister, Elizabeth, wasn’t hisfault, but he had to pay the price.
“You won’t get away withthis,” Alex said.
The gun went off, and pain exploded inAlex’s abdomen. It wasn’t an instant killer shot, but in time, he’dlose too much blood.
“I think it’s only fair you getto watch your woman die, Alex. You can’t do anything to protect herjust like I couldn’t.”
Seconds later Preston and his crew lefthis home.Alex crawled across the floor, smearing blood in his waketo try to get to Sunshine. She was shaking, and he was losing toomuch blood. He could barely move, and he grabbed his cellphone.
Alex put a call through toTiny.
There was no answer. After the thirdcall, Alex started to give up hope. When he phoned the emergency,Alex had lost all focus. He was bleeding faster than everbefore.
“I’m sorry,” he said, talking to Sunshine.
He’d really thought he could run away fromhis past. With everything going on around them, he should haveknown there was no running away from the past.Sooner or later, itwas going to catch up to you.
The End
