The ambulance took a sharp turn that didn’t sit well with her and further clouded everything she didn’t understand and wasn’t privy to about Mac’s play for power, but she wanted to come back. Though onlyaftershe assessed what the future should look like.

Tick, tock. Liam’s day crawled by, and he pinched the bridge of his nose wondering how much time he’d wasted. Sorenson hadagainhad him hauled into their special meeting place. The location took forever to get to, then the senator made him wait and wait some more. He couldn’t even play on his phone to pass the time.

Time didn’t seem to be a commodity that Sorenson cared about. She operated in terms of calculated power moves, and even though Liam knew that, he couldn’t see what her point was today.

The outer door unlocked and opened, followed by the glass one.

This time Sorenson was joined again by Westin and Black as they entered the glass cube meeting room and took the standard positions, with Sorenson sitting directly across from Liam.

“Good morning,” Liam offered.

Curt smiles and nods were the only responses. Something was different about them. The air of disagreement hung heavily, and Liam shifted in the uncomfortable chair. “Or is it good afternoon by now…”

No one smiled, and he made a mental note to keep the passive aggressive jokes to himself.

“How are Frank and Linda?” the senator asked tartly.

“Doing well.”

“Anything out of the ordinary?”

Liam played a few ways that question could be taken. After a moment’s pause, he decided to take it in a broad, how-are-they-doing way. “Not that I can think of.”

She scowled. “That’s all you’d like to share?”

Did she want him to explain the surveillance equipment? Too bad. He’d done nothing to tip Pham off, so she could kiss his left nut. “I guess.”

“You’re keeping tabs on their house,” she snipped.

That was less a question and more of an accusation. He offered a closed-mouth smile and didn’t say shit.

She glared at Westin then knit her bony fingers together. Her bracelets clinked, and Liam studied their dynamic, unable to read the unsaid conversation.

“We’ve been over this,” Westin said. “Keeping an eye on the house is a smart move.”

“And if Pham saw the setup? The equipment?”

“He didn’t. Everything installed is military-grade and untraceable. They know what they’re doing.”

Liam ran his tongue along his teeth.Hehad been under surveillance? And they evaluated his gear? But he kept quiet. If Westin was defending his actions to Sorenson, Liam wouldn’t interrupt.

Her thickly mascaraed eyes beaded and lasered his way. “You’re working with a team.”

Liam shook his head. “A couple friends are helping me keep an eye on the place.”

Her bracelets jangled. “That’s—”

“That’s,” Westin interrupted, “not a problem.”

“It is if we’re ever going to catch Pham,” she snapped.

Westin shook his head as if they’d had that argument before.

“Are you two on the same side or not?” Liam stared at the senator. “I’m following your asinine rules. God knows why, when it’smylife in the crosshairs. A womanIloved was murdered. The peopleIcare about are the walking targets. I don’t see a lot of you invested in Pham, other than the glory from a takedown.”

She straightened, gaze widening as if no one had every called her out on her bullshit before. “Watch yourself, Brosnan.”
