“He just gets overly excited. Especially when he sees someone new he likes. So he must like you.” I grinned at Veda, and she averted her eyes.
Jolene looked between us with curiosity, and I shot her a dirty look, hoping she’d stop reading me so damn well.
“He’s adorable. A little big but so fluffy. How did you come up with his name?” Veda smiled warmly, her eyes big and full of wonder. Dammit, did she need to be so pretty?
Jolene rolled her eyes and snickered. “He barks. Likea lot.”
“Not anymore.” I quickly came to my dog’s defense. “But he did when he was a puppy. I adopted him, and he came from an abusive background. It took him a while to settle down and become comfortable. At the time, Jolene lived with me, and she couldn’t handle it.”
Veda watched us bicker back and forth in the loving way we always did.
“C’mon, you’re gonna scare off Veda. She and I need to get some work done,” Jolene said before sliding her arm through Veda’s. “Let’s go talk out back. Bye, bro.”
“Bye, Caden. Nice seeing you again.” Veda waved.
I watched as they walked away, but my eyes focused on one thing and one thing only—Veda’s sexy hips swinging back and forth as she walked.
“Like what you see?” Cash’s voice came from behind me, Sammy in his arms, with my dog bringing up the rear.
“Huh?” I spun around and pretended I had no idea what he was talking about.
“Obviously, you’re not staring at your sister walking away.” Cash eyed me suspiciously, a little mischievous gleam in his eye.
“What? Can’t I appreciate the sight of a beautiful woman?”
“Of course you can. But she’s a lot older than you, dude. So I doubt she’d be interested in a young buck such as yourself.”
“A lot older? How old is she?”
“I think Leighton said early forties or something.”
I whistled low. “Damn. And she still looks that good?”
Cash shrugged. “Guess so. Hey, maybe she’s into younger guys. She kind of has that cougar look going on.” Cash winked. “Just don’t fuck anything up while she’s planning my kid’s party, okay?”
“Parrrteeehh!” Sammy clapped his hands.
“Yeah, yeah. I won’t.”
“That means no sleeping with her.”
“What are you, my boss or something?”
“Just looking out for you, man. I gotta go check on Leighton. She wasn’t feeling good this morning. I’ll catch you in a bit.”
“Okay, hope she feels better.”
But after Cash disappeared inside, I couldn’t stop thinking about what he said.
Just don’t fuck anything up while she’s planning my kid’s party, okay?
I wasn’t going to sleep with the hot older woman. A gut feeling told me it wouldn’t end well, not with the feelings she seemed to stir up inside me.
Hell no.
