“I realize that.I’mthe one who gave you that instruction. Now I’m asking you to tell me where he is.”
“Why?”
Biting back a growl, I say, “Because I need to know.”Because I need to know if he’s close enough to go and see him.
“I’m sorry, Skylar. I have my orders.”
I curse under my breath. “Fine,” I snap, hanging up. Reaching behind me, I grab the first pillow my hand lands on and cover my face with it. Then I scream until my throat is raw. Sure, I feel a little ridiculous doing it, but damn, I need to let it out.
There’s a knock at the door, making me pause. I toss the pillow aside and get up, walking over and flipping the lock over. I open the door and my breath catches at the sight of Nikolai. How did he find me?“What do you want?”
He ignores my question, asking one of his own. “What were you doing before I got here?”
Fuck. Fuck, fuck, fuck.
I cock a brow. “I told Aurora I would check on her parents.”
“Hmm,” he hums, “and did you also tell her that you’d check on Tristan?”
“What?” I seethe.
“I got a call from Tristan’s detail. He said you contacted him asking for Tristan’s location. He thought you were going to try and see him and knew it was dangerous if that was the case.”
I cross my arms. “Oh, so you’re stalking me now.”
“It was reckless, Skylar,” he says in a low voice.
“Save the lecture, Nikolai,” I shoot back. “I’m not in the mood.”
“And I’mnot in the moodto have part of our mission compromised, so get your shit together.”
I step back as if he’s hit me, and regret flashes across his face.
I walk over to the bed and sit on the end. “I miss him,” I mutter. “I didn’t think I would this much. He’s not dead,” I sigh, “but he may as well be right now.”
“I know,” Nik comments softly, walking over and sitting beside me. He rests his hand on my knee, warming my skin. “I miss Aurora. You’re not the only one, Sky. It’s okay to miss them, but we’re doing the right thing by letting them be, letting them have their happiness. They deserve it.”
He’s right. They fought hard for their partnership, and as much as the two of them together could be annoying as hell, I’m glad for them. Whatever they’re doing with their human lives, it’s making them happy.
Maybe one day, I’ll understand what that’s like.
“Sky,” he whispers, making me angle my body toward him as my face turns to meet his deep, hooded gaze.
Without warning, I straddle him and seal my lips over his, kissing him with so much desperation I could scream.
It doesn’t take long for him to tug me closer, wrapping his arms around my waist. My arms drape over his shoulders as our noses brush, and he deepens the kiss, flicking his tongue along my bottom lip. I gasp against his mouth when he presses his lower half into me, and I push my fingers into his hair, tugging hard enough he growls, nipping my lip.
We break away only to take a breath and stand. I kick off my shoes and reach for the buttons on his shirt, making fast work of getting them undone and exposing his downright lickable chest. I should know. I’ve licked it a few times. But not nearly enough. I swallow hard, turning so he can unzip my dress.
Nikolai’s breath is hot against my neck where his lips press against my pulse as he guides my zipper down. He pushes it slowly off my shoulders, and the dress gathers in a pool of material on the floor around my feet.
I kick it away, spinning around to stand before him in nothing but a black lace thong. Tracing my fingers along the ridges of his chest, my eyes follow the lines as I press my lips together.
“Sky,” he murmurs in a husky tone.
My eyes bounce to his, and my cheeks feel warm.
“I don’t want to fuck you.” His voice is gentle, warm, but it feels like a cold, hard punch to the gut.
