"It's just a test, Alpha Ash. Luna approved it. It's completely safe and will do no harm," Dr. Myers said. "And I'm going to swab their mouths, not their noses. I need to scrape a few cells—"
"SCRAPE!" he thundered, and I rolled my eyes. "Listen, doc, I know six different ways to kill you and make it look like an accident! There ain't going to be any scraping ofanythingon my brand-new pups!"
Dr. Myers ignored him and tried to go about his business with his usual calm, relaxed face.
You had to look very close to see the terror in his eyes.
Don't worry, doc. I won't let them do anything to you, I told him.
Thank you, luna. I am a bit concerned. Alpha Ash does not seem to be at home to reason at this time.
I can imagine him ignoring the doorbell quite frequently from now on,I giggled.
"Brother, I don't understand your kind of crazy," Mason was saying as he patted Ash on the back, "but I do admire your total commitment to it."
"You mean you'reokaywith this?" he shrieked. "Allof you are okay with this?"
"Oh, you hadmeat, 'Make it look like an accident.' " Looming over Dr. Myers, Cole clenched his hands into white-knuckled fists.
"How are the rest of you fine with this?" Ash glared at Wyatt, Jayden, and Mason.
"Listen, the man's a professional." Wyatt put his hand on Dr. Myers' shoulder. "And you know what we'll do to you if you mess up,don't you, doc?"
"Posy wouldn't have approved it without knowing the details," Mason argued and pulled Wyatt's hand away from the doctor before he crushed the poor man's shoulder. "I trust her judgment. You should, too."
"And you, Jay?" Ash demanded.
"I agree with what Mase said, but it's notmeyou need to worry about," Jayden said through gritted teeth, and Quartz's dark growl underscored every word.
Time to intervene.
"All right, that's enough, all of you. I asked him to run a special test. It won't hurt the pups, I promise. Dr. Myers, how long until we have the results?"
"About an hour."
"Posy? What is this test?" Ash kept his body between the doctor and our pups, but cut his eyes over at me.
"You'll find out in about an hour. Now let the man do his job, please."
"Is something wrong with our pups?" His eyes glowed green as Sid ascended in a panic, and I hurried to calm him down.
"No, no, of course not. They're fine, right, Dr. Myers?"
"They sure are. Biggest, healthiest triplets I've seen in a long time."
Reassured, Ash reluctantly moved aside, but hovered like an avenging angel and watched Dr. Myers' every move. He only settled down when he saw that the sleeping babies didn't even stir as the doctor swabbed the insides of their cheeks.
The nurses put a teeny diaper on each pup, then picked them up and carried them over to me. I had Mason help me lower the front of the gown so the nurses could lay the babies on my bare chest. It was my first time holding them and seeing them up close, and I counted their tiny fingers and toes with wonder as I inhaled their sweet, precious scent.
My mates gathered around us and each of them bent down to kiss the babies' heads one at a time. Of course, they also dropped kisses on my cheeks, too, making me smile.
"And now there is only one pack." Wyatt's voice cracked, and my eyes flew to his.
"Are you okay, my fifth star?" I asked quietly.
"Sorry. It's a little bittersweet." He swiped his fingers under his eyes. "As soon as the first baby took a breath, I felt River Rapids dissolve while something in Five Fangs clicked into place. What about the rest of you?"
They all agreed they'd felt it, too.
