"With your permission, Alpha Price, I'll be coming to Five Fangs. If I leave now, I can be there just after lunch."
"Sounds fine. Here's my cell in case you're running late or something comes up." I rattled off the number and waited until he'd written it down. "Can I ask what this is about? Do I need to sign the boy out of school to be here when you arrive?"
"Whoa. Wait. How old is he?"
My eyebrows drew together as I tried to remember, but there were thousands of members in our pack. I couldn't keep up with everyone's age. I ended up linking Reuben, whose younger brother hung out with Donahue all the time.
He just turned sixteen, alpha,Reuben informed me. Is he in trouble again?
I don't know yet, but I might need you to sign him out of school and bring him here.
And how should I sign him out of school? I'm not his guardian. Reuben rolled his eyes at me.
I don't know! I growled.Pretend to be his uncle or something.
Alpha. I'm a half-Japanese nineteen-year-old. No one's going to buy that I'm a white boy's uncle.
Fine. I'll have Jared Hall deal with that part, but wait until I tell you to go get him.
Just let me know, alpha. I'm training with the weekend patrol, but I can hand it off to Olivia Benson.
I grunted at him, then went back to my conversation with Alpha Quake and told him Donahue's age.
"Day-um! I didn't realize he was just a kid, too!" He whistled through his teeth. "You'll want his parents there, then."
"They're gone," I told him bluntly, getting a real bad feeling now. "All his family died in the sickness. He lives with his great-grandmother, but she's not going to be much help. In fact, my mate was suggesting just the other night that we need to find a better home for him as the boy is running wild."
"Well, Alpha Price, I believe your mate might be blessed with foresight," Alpha Quake drawled, "because I'm bringing him something that's going to change his whole life."
Not liking the mystery, I demanded he tell me what was going on. Garnet came out a little in my voice, making Matthew jump to his feet and stand at attention, which changed my scowl into a smirk.
It was good to keep Matthew on his toes.
But what Alpha Quake said wiped all expression off my face, and I hung up the phone knowing Posy was right. We needed an answer to the problem that was Bridger Donahue, and we needed itnow.
Unfortunately, it was looking more and more like the only suitable solution was what she'd suggested over dinner two nights ago.
"You’re dismissed, Matthew."
"Alpha." With a nod, my beta bolted for the door.
Garnet showed me Posy reminding me to use my manners just this morning, and I sighed.
"Hey, Matthew?"
"Yes, alpha?"
"Thanks for your help," I muttered, and he grinned before saluting me and taking off.
I plunked down in the chair he'd vacated and ran one hand through my hair, dreading what I was about to do.
You might not like dealing with him, but Posy's right on this one, Garnet told me.
I know it. Like Sid says, mate is always right.
Damn straight, Garnet chuckled.
Delaying no longer, I linked my father.
