"Yeah, she's a natural," Wyatt added as he joined us. "She'll be driving like a pro in no time."
"Good job, honey!" Cole picked me up in a bear hug.
"Nice work, sweetness."
"I knew you'd do well, little flower."
And I smiled into Cole's shoulder, proud of myself for pushing past my mistakes to continue growing.
15: The Percys
Posy
After dinner, Tyler linked me that there were supposed to be shooting stars tonight, so I pleaded until my boys gave in - not that it took much beyond a pout and big eyes - and they hauled pillows and blankets to the front yard. I carried out a tray of snacks and Ash grabbed some drinks, then we sprawled out and munched and waited for the sky to get dark enough to see nature's show.
"I forgot about the Perseids," Mason told me as he tucked his hands under his head and stared up at the sky. "It lasts for a few weeks, but August is the best time to see it."
"It happens every year?" I asked as I propped myself up next to him and laid my hand over his heart.
"Yep. We should be able to see them anytime after midnight, but they'll be brightest before dawn."
"Let's make this a yearly thing, if we can!" I suggested with a wide grin. "A trip to the beach, then a camp-out to watch the Percys!"
Ash, Jayden and Wyatt broke into peals of giggles, and even Cole chuckled.
"What?" I frowned as I looked at them.
"Per-se-ids," Mason said, slowing it down so I could hear how to pronounce it. "It's a meteor shower named after the constellation Perseus, who was a Greek hero."
"Oh." I leaned down and pecked his lips, and his hands settled on my hips. "Thanks for explaining."
"You know, you might like to learn about Greek mythology," Cole said. "Jay, you can find her some books on it, right?"
"Sure thing. I have some at the alpha library. I'll pick up the best ones the next time I'm there."
"Thank you." I smiled over at him. "So can we? Make this a yearly thing?"
"Whatever you want, cupcake," Ash mumbled, his words slow and slurred. Now that he was flat on his back, he was shutting down. "Now come give me kisses. I ain't going to make it to see the Percys this year."
"Aw, but it's only twenty minutes before midnight!" I protested, then felt bad when I saw him force his heavy eyelids open.
"Sorry. I'll try—"
He started to sit up, and I stretched over Mason to push him back down.
"I'll show you the memory tomorrow, okay?" I gave him a smooch and stroked his soft curls. "As long as you're here with us, that's what matters the most. Even if youareasleep, I just want us all together."
"Thanks, baby. Love you."
"I love you, too, waffle. Good night."
He snored his reply, and I giggled at his cuteness. When I went to sit up, Mason moved his hands to wrap his arms around me and held me tight against his chest.
"I like you laying here," he whispered. "I like feeling your little weight on me and knowing you're safe and where I can keep you that way."
With a loving smile, I held his face between my palms and kissed his forehead, then his nose, then either cheek, then his chin. When I raised my head, he frowned at me.
"You forgot the best place," he muttered.
