At his words, my eyes flew back to his.
"I'm a glitch." He shrugged. "A shifter who can't shift and has no animal spirit. A witchborn who has no magic beyond a little healing power. I was sure you wouldn't want me."
Hearing that description, my brain finally put the pieces together.
"Angelodella Morte?" I whispered. "My mate is the Angel of Death?"
"Andmymate is the most handsome man I've ever met."
My face lit on fire at the compliment, and a surprised smile bloomed on his lips.
"You're blushing," he murmured.
Of course, that made my face burn worse.
"So cute!" he chuckled.
Laying his hands on either side of my face, he stroked his thumbs over my scorching cheekbones. I shivered as tingles flitted over my skin, and the wonderment in his eyes as he stared at his hands told me he was feeling the same thing.
"Is it okay if I touch you? I can stop if it makes you uncomfortable." He gave me a crooked smile. "You can touch me whenever you want."
Taking him at his word, I did what I'd been longing to from the moment I first saw him. I slid my trembling fingers into his messy hair and played with the thick strands.
It's every bit as soft as I thought it'd be.
Soft fluff!Cove yipped, which made me roll my eyes at him.
Ever so slowly, I leaned down and pressed my lips to his forehead, and sparks exploded under my lips. I heard his sharp inhale and was thrilled to know he was as affected as I was.
"Hey! No fair. I want to kiss you, too!" he laughed. "Come down here. How tall are you, anyway? I'm five eleven and the top of my head is barely even with your chin."
"Six six," I mumbled as I messed with his hair.
He wants our kisses! Leave the fluff and kiss mate!Cove growled.
Calm down. I'm working up my courage, okay?
Now, Em! Want our first kiss!
"Have you kissed anyone before?" I asked, my cheeks again growing hot with embarrassment at my lack of experience.
"No. Even though I believed I wouldn't have one, I wanted to stay faithful to my mate."
"Oh, thank the Goddess," I breathed. "Me, too. I havenoidea what I'm doing."
"Want to figure it out together?"
"Oh, yeah."
"Then come down here," he smirked.
So I did.

One time, maybe two years ago now, the fae king asked for help to relocate a phoenix that built a nest too close to a pixie colony. Fortunately, I was able to convince the fire bird I meant no harm and only wanted to find a safer place for her babies. While I carefully packed each egg for transport, embers rained down on me as she hovered anxiously overhead, her wings shedding sparks like a welding torch.
