"Matthew? I can't. Ican't!"
I hurried over to her, and she shoved her phone at me with trembling hands. Confused, I looked at the screen and read, "Alpha James Briggs."
Isn't that her brother?I wondered.
Shrugging, I accepted the call.
"Hello, Luna Posy's phone. This is Beta Matthew Rose. How may I help you?"
"Beta, is my baby sister happy and well?"
"Yes, alpha. You're on speaker, and she is standing here with me."
A long pause followed.
"Hello, Posy. Aiden's here with me on speaker, too. We understand and accept you not wanting to talk to us. I wouldn't want to talk to us, either, if I were you. We know we failed you in every way possible, and nothing will ever absolve us of that."
I looked at my luna and held the phone out to her, but she shook her head furiously. Her bottom lip quivered as her eyes glistened with tears.
"She's listening to you, alpha, but doesn't want to speak," I said.
"We love you, baby sister," came a new voice.
Other brother?asked Arroyo, my wolf. The Aiden guy?
Yeah, Roy,I told him. He's the beta of the pack now.
"It's been a week and we wanted to check on you," Beta Aiden continued, "I hope you're safe and those mates of yours are treating you well."
"She is and they are," I relayed.
"We've been making a lot of changes here at Green River." Alpha Briggs either wasn't concerned his sister was silent, or he'd expected it. "We tore down the alpha house. Neither of us could stand even stepping foot in it, let alone live in it. We're going to rebuild on the same site, and there will be lots of windows. No more dark rooms, baby sister."
Dark rooms? Was their father a photographer?
No.Roy shook his head.Something bad. Dark room is bad. Luna hurts!
He was right. Her obvious distress sent a sharp spike into my heart as her tears finally fell.
The alphas will notice that for sure, I grumbled.
Other betas, too, Roy agreed.
Right on cue, the five alphas, Tristan, and Crew bombarded me, asking what happened. I linked them all that she was on the phone with her brothers, and that I was there and would stay with her until she hung up.
The alphas' language made my ears burn, and I told them I was closing the link so I could focus on my luna. Crew and Tristan wanted to know if they should come to the kitchen, but I asked them to give me the chance to deal with it.
Thankfully, Emerson and Tyler were out cold, catching up on their sleep from last night in preparation for tonight. Otherwise, they would have been down here faster than a lightning bolt, and I'd lose this opportunity to make things right between us.
Holding out my free hand, I motioned Luna Posy closer, and she hesitantly shuffled over. I put my arm around her shoulders and, after a moment, she burrowed into my side.
So tiny!Roy murmured.Why she shaking?
She's scared, I think. And yeah, it's like holding a fragile little bird. No wonder the alphas were so fierce when they told us how careful we needed to be with her.
"Posy?" Alpha Briggs asked.
"She's crying a bit," I said.
