Since his wolf is Ruby, he thought it was a sign to take it, so he picked it up by the chain and thought about resetting it into a ring. The house chose that moment to shift under his feet, and the pendant whacked him in the face, one of the sharp facets cutting him.

I glanced over at him to see him touching a small, white star-shaped scar on the left side of his jaw.

"Next thing I knew, my head was filled with a new voice, one that was neither man nor wolf," he said. "You know how it feels when you shift and hand control over to your wolf? Like she's driving and you're in the backseat along for the ride? It was similar, only I couldn't regain control like I can when Ruby is being stubborn."

He shook his head and clenched his hands into fists.

"Like an alpha command, a demon is impossible to disobey," he muttered. "I was forced to watch everything it did while wearing my body, and there was nothing I could do. I couldn't fight it, I couldn't overpower it, and I couldn't command it. I was a prisoner inside my own head."

"What about Ruby?" I tilted my head, curious about how a demon affected a wolf. "What did he do?"

"The demon couldn't control him quite as well, but it kept him locked down. Ruby tried to protect me. Tried to take the psychic damage for me. I think he's in worse shape than I am right now, but the one witch said we'll both recover with time."

He let out a dark chuckle that made me frown.

"That is, if Angelo della Morte doesn't end me first. I knew the demon made a bad choice involving the del Vecchio flock, and I wished no harm to any of those witches, but I have to admit, I hoped it would attract the Angel of Death's attention. I just wanted to die."

Getting to my feet, I stood in front of him, framed his face between my palms, and stared into his dark brown eyes for a long moment. He didn't move, didn't even seem to be breathing, and I finally dropped my hands and stood straight.

"And you still do," I murmured.

His lips trembled as he pressed them together and his gaze dropped to the grass.

"How can I live with the memories, with all the blood on my head?" His voice cracked and a tear slid from each eye. "Even more important, how can I ever make this right? What could I possibly do to make up for all the evil these hands have done?"

There were still plenty of questions that needed to be answered. Why had the demon been so obsessed with Queen Lilah? What happened to the ruby pendant and that trunk of stuff in the sinking house? Still, I knew what decision was the right one.

He's coming home with us,I told my boys.

Honey, wait a minute—

We should talk first, cutie—

Uh, princess, I don't think—

Isaid, he's coming home with us. My word is your law, remember? So make it happen. And that's the end of it.

Yes, luna,Mason smirked, and the humor glazing his voice told me he accepted and agreed with my decision.

And if Mason did, the others would, too.

It good to be luna, Lark chuckled.

It's good to have my mates' trust and respect, I corrected her.

22: For Real

Posy

Much, much later, my mates and I were in our bed and Jayden had his hand between my thighs.

Sucking one of my nipples, he rubbed his thumb against my nub until my heart tried to beat out of my rib cage. I desperately wanted to catch what I was chasing, and he made sure I did.

"Jayden!" I cried out, clinging to his shoulders.

"Why does Jay always get to make her come first?" I heard Wyatt whine through the fog in my brain.

Jayden huffed in annoyance, gathered me against him, and rolled us so I was on the edge of the mattress and as far away from the others as I could get. I giggled at him, and he smiled.
