"I'll have you and Ty. Why do I need another guard?"

"Better safe than sorry. If something happens, Angelo has more experience than any of us with the supernatural in general. It only makes sense."

I studied his serious face and solemn brown eyes and saw only concern. He wasn't trying to trick me into getting his mate close enough to the enemy to kill him.

"Okay," I sighed and turned to Angelo, "you can lurk, but stay out of sight."

"So where do you want to do this interview?" Wyatt asked. "You're not going to the prison."

"Why not?"

"It's foul and not a place you need to see." Jayden frowned.

He was usually the first to give in to me, but I could tell he wasn't going to budge on this one.

And I'm not all that interested in hanging out in a jail cell, anyway.

"How about his office?" Ash suggested.

"How about the front yard?" I raised my eyebrows. "It's shady under the trees, and the heatwave has finally broken. Fresh air and sunshine and—

"And Angelo will have a clear shot if something goes wrong," Cole muttered.

I huffed and rolled my eyes at him.

"Honey, you are far too willing to find good in him. It may blind you to the truth."

"I think that's better than all of you, who are far too willing to believe there isnogood in him."

"Has he said much?" I asked the Maxwell twins.

After escorting Beatrix back to the alpha house, they returned to help Emerson and me rearrange the lawn furniture. Angelo had disappeared as soon as we came outside, but I knew he was lurking somewhere nearby.

Probably in a perfect shooting position, I thought sourly.

"He asked about some of the pack members," Zayne said, "and he—"

"He cried when we told him who died," Zayden picked up when Zayne stopped talking, "and when we told him what he did to Lilah and Junie."

I tapped my chin with an index finger as I thought.

"The bad shifters, the ones who were Leo's by choice and not coercion, how long were they in your pack?"

"A few months," the twins said in unison.

"We don't know where they came from," Zayne said.

"They weren't vetted by Luke or our gamma, yet suddenly they were in our pack," Zayden added.

"Who's the gamma?" I asked.

"No one now. ItwasMarcus Romano, who disappeared about eight months ago. After that, there was a new guy named Rafe, but Q—"

"The king killed him," Emerson cut Zayne off and gave him a look. "Luna bunny, should I go fetch Tyler and Halder now?"

"Tyler can't do it by himself?" I raised an eyebrow.
