"Areyoumad at me, Masey?"
"Me? No, I'm not mad."
"Promise?"
"I promise." Knowing Wyatt rarely remembered anything of what happened when Granite was fully in charge, I leaned down and kissed his forehead. "I love you, Gran. You're my baby brother."
"I amnota baby, Masey!" He glared up at me and pouted his lips.
"You'll always be the youngest of us," I explained. "That makes you the baby."
"And I'm a boy!" Now his face beamed with a smile. "That's why you call me baby brother, right?"
Goddess, this kid.Garnet rolled his eyes, but his smile was pure affection.
"Yeah. That's why. Now, I need you to be brave, okay?"
"But Masey, I don't want to! I want to talk to you."
And now we were back to a pout.
"You can link me anytime and you can come out again when Wyattisn'tstruggling. This is not healthy for either of you, and you know that. Besides, it's getting late and I'm really tired."
"Okay, I'll do it." He nodded his head rapidly. "Masey needs me to be a good boy and be brave."
"That's right, but you know what?"
"What?"
"You'realwaysa good boy, Gran."
The brilliant smile that broke over his face was one I would never get out of Wyatt, which made me treasure it all the more.
"I go sleepies after, 'kay?"
"Okay. I know you're tired, too. It's way past bedtime for little wolves."
"Yes." He nodded solemnly. "Nighty-night."
"Good night, baby brother."
He closed his eyes and laid his head on my shoulder. I pushed my foot on the floor to set us rocking again and waited for Granite to 'be brave,' which basically meant to convince Wyatt he needed to come back to the real world.
I had almost drifted off when I felt Wyatt's whole body tense.
And now for the difficult part,Garnet grumbled.

Wyatt
I kept my eyes closed and prayed I'd disappear.
By the moon, I hate myself sometimes.
"Stop beating yourself up."
Under my ear, Mason's chest rumbled with his deep voice, and his arms tightened around me a little bit.
