"Also in one word? Perfect." He gave me a half-smile. "You were a straight-A student, polite and respectful to your teachers and parents, kind to everyone, even those who tried to bully you. Hmm. Did you know I beat Ferris Cargill to his knees that day he troubled you during gym class?"

"You didn't!"

"I did." His voice grew gruff. "I made damn sure everyone knew to leave you alone or they'd answer to me. We weren't mates yet, but you were mine, even if I wasn't worthy of the sweetest, loveliest girl in the pack."

More than twenty years, and this man still knew how to make my heart flutter.

"Royal, think back to when the twins were children. Who did our son act like more, you or me?"

"You, of course," he scoffed.

I saw the exact moment he understood. His skin lost all color and shock widened his eyes.

"I have no idea how you'll rebuild your relationship with our son." I got to my feet and laid my palms flat on the top of the desk. "If you want to keep your relationship withme, however, I recommend that you figure it out. Quickly."

"Jules—"

"We already lost our daughter in the sickness, which neither of us could control. I will not lose our son because you drove him away."

"Julia—"

"I'm heading over to their place, and I'm going to ask to stay the night. Don't follow me. Don't link me or call me. I'll let you know when I'm ready to talk."

"Julia—"

"I love you, Royal, but I don't like you very much right now. In all these years, I have never once been disappointed in you. Until now."

My heart shattered at the immense hurt that welled in his eyes, but I made myself walk past him and out the door.

When we got home from the party, Posy gave us kisses, then went up to her special room.

The boys and I stood in the kitchen and looked at each other with helpless eyes, and I knew they felt as lost as I did.

Mase, my mother nudged the mind link.May I please come over?

You're always welcome, I told her,butPosy's ... in a bad place, which means the boys and I are not doing so good, either.

I can help her, honey. I need and want to help her. Please let me. And,she paused.

And?I encouraged her after a few seconds.

And I need a place to stay tonight.

Did he throw you out?!Outrage made my tone sharp.

No. I left. I ... can't be around him right now. He admitted some things tonight that I wishyouwould have told me about a long time ago.

I grimaced, wondering what exactly he'd admitted to.
