And then?my wolf wanted to know.
Then the office might get trashed. There may be a little screaming. And possibly some blood.
Good, Garnet grinned.
"Enter," I said, and the office door opened.
My father came in with a closed look I knew all too well.
"Have a seat, Mr. Price." I waved a hand at the chairs in front of my desk. "What can I do for you?"
"You're not seriously going to keep calling me—"
"I'm dead serious. Now why did you come here?"
"Hmpf." My father sat down on a chair and crossed his legs, his hands folded on his knee. "All right. I'll tell you why. Last night, I did a little digging on that mate of yours. Did you know her mother cheated on her husband with a rogue?A rogue! And poor Alpha Kendall Briggs was stuck raising that girl as his daughter."
"You know nothing about the situation. Don't listen to rumors and call it the truth."
I clenched my hands into white-knuckled fists under the desk. He was being civilized, though, so I had to be, too.
No matter how much I longed to beat him to his knees.
"How do you know she won't end up being an adulteress like her mother?" he asked with raised eyebrows. "When she starts popping out pups, how will any of you boys know that they're yours?"
"Our girl is as sweet and innocent as a flower and would never cheat on us." I hesitated to tell him, but the information was nothing that could harm Posy. "As for her mother, she was kidnapped and raped by rogues, and Posy was the result."
"How do you know she isn't playing you all?" he demanded.
"Drop the subject," I ordered. "Next topic on your agenda, or have you run out of venom for today?"
"What's with all the witches being inducted into the pack? Did you vet these people?"
"They're mates with our betas. I'm not separating mates." I rolled my eyes. Seriously? This was the 'urgent and dire' concern? "Besides, you know it takes all five of us to agree to induct people into the pack. It wasn't my decision alone."
"But they'rebird shifters! Do you have any idea what mutant babies a blend of shifters might produce?" He shuddered.
What, is he picturing wolves with wings?Garnet chuffed, amused.Or birds with teeth and furry ears?
"They will be members of the pack," I assured him, "and under our protection."
He stared at me for a long time, his gray eyes as cold and unblinking as my own. Finally, he shook his head slowly from side to side.
"You are such a disappointment, Mason. This pack will fail under your weak leadership."
His words were like black pitch being splattered on me. Sure, I could ignore or forget them, but they left a stain. A dark and indelible stain.
The door burst open and slammed against the wall, shaking me out of my grim thoughts, and my eyes surveyed the tiny, quivering figure standing in the doorway.
"It's time for you to leave, Mr. Price."

I didn't mean to eavesdrop on Mason's appointment, but when I picked up Mr. Price's scent in the hallway, I couldn't hold back from checking on my mate. I leaned my ear against the wooden door and heard them talking about the witches, but it wasn't until I heard his father say that Mason was a disappointment that I let my emotions get the better of me.
Flinging the door open harder than I intended, I forced myself to square my shoulders rather than hunch them, then told Mr. Price that it was time for him to leave.
