Page 85 of Mates: Posy

Good.

He carefully lowered himself down on our mate, covering her tiny body completely from view. Gisela's wolf stood guard beside us, her ears pricked up and her eyes constantly scanning.

My brothers barreled over, and Topaz stood up when they reached us. He watched closely as they dropped to their knees and checked her with gentle hands.

"Looks like she hit her head," Ash muttered. "Let’s get her back to the house."

Wyatt had her up in his arms before Ash could finish speaking.

"Hey! I wanted to carry her!" Ash pouted.

Topaz met Gisela’s wolf’s gaze, and they both rolled their eyes.

Suddenly, royal alpha power blasted across the field, sending us all to our knees. Wyatt managed to hold onto Posy as he dropped, thank the Goddess.

"WHERE IS SHE?" King Julian thundered.

After a few seconds, we were all freed to move again, and I figured he’d found Lilah. With a nod, Gisela’s wolf took off in the king’s direction, and I joined Ash and Wyatt. We hustled around to the vehicles, where Mase and the betas struggled to corral a snarling Quartz.

"Get her home!" Mase shouted.

We piled into the SUV, and Ash asked Wyatt how Posy was as he pulled out of the parking lot.

"Physically? Lark’s already healing her. Mentally? She’s shivering in her sleep, dude, and I know it’s not from her injury."

"She’s strong." Ash sounded like he was reminding himself of that.

True, Topaz nodded, but even the strongest can falter.

"Then we’ll be her strength until she can be strong again," Ash told him.

Yes,I agreed. Whatever she needs, that is what we will provide.

Two hours later, I laid on the couch with Posy on my chest. Every twenty minutes or so, she whimpered in her sleep. I stroked her back and murmured sweet words until she quieted again.

I really had to pee by now and was considering linking Ash to come home just to hold her while I went to the bathroom. Before I got that desperate, though, she woke with a sharp gasp and a little jump.

"You’re okay, baby," I said in a soft voice. "You’re safe. I’ve got you."

She gripped my shirt in tight fists and sighed.

"Want some water?"

She shook her head.

"Do you hurt anywhere?"

She shook her head again, and worry bit at me. Her silence was a warning sign that Mase and Jay had picked up on and pointed out to the rest of us oblivious cavemen.

"Do you feel better now?" I tried again. "Did the nap help?"

She nodded.

"Talk to me, honey," I begged the only person I wouldeverbeg.

"What happened?" she whispered. "I remember I was with Lilah and she was running and then … nothing."
