11: Quartz the Comforter
Posy
I woke up in Jayden’s arms and realized I was back in our bed. Blinking slowly, I raised my head and found him staring down at me with golden eyes.
Quartz, then. Not Jayden.
"Feel better?" he asked.
I swallowed hard and shrugged.
"No one is angry with you," he assured me. "No one wants to get rid of you. We all love you. Topaz and Granite were telling the truth about what happened. I talked to them myself, and they would not dare lie to me."
My lips trembled, so I pressed them tightly together.
"Posy, I am only a wolf, and a violent one at that. I have no idea how to comfort my upset mate, and Lark will not speak to any of us. Please talk to me."
"She’s scared that you all will hate her for defying you and talking back to you," I said at last. "She’s also embarrassed she punched that girl."
Quartz chuckled, and my eyes widened.
Quartz chuckled?
Quartz?!
"I was proud of you, Lark," he said before I could get over my shock. "Not only did you stand up for your mate, you showed those girls how strong you are. Reminded your other mates, too. They made the mistake of thinking you are too gentle to defend yourself or protect others."
Thank you, my love, Lark told him. Will my other wolves—
"They are also proud of you. Talk to them. They need to hear your voice."
I felt Lark slip away and knew she was following his advice.
Quartz reached up and carefully undid my space buns, then ran his hands over my hair in slow, even strokes. I found myself drifting into a peaceful trance as he did so.
"Shall I tell you about the wolf I met this morning?" he murmured.
"The one who wants to join our pack? Yes, please."
"His name is Luke MacGregor. He was the beta of the Tall Pines Pack, but had an issue with the alpha. The boys are going to have to call the king about it. He has a little sister. Their pack bullied her badly, which was another reason he wanted to leave. Yesterday morning, their alpha, Leo Halder, attacked her."
"Is she okay?" I tensed and sat up.
"She will be."
"You didn’t put her in the pack house, did you? That might be too chaotic—"
"Jayden set them up in the small guest house not far from here."
"Good." I relaxed and laid back on his chest. "Will Alpha Halder let them move here without making a fuss?"
"Ha! Let him make a fuss. I would relish that fight. Besides, Jayden already made them part ofourpack, the Moonset Pack, to cut the connection to Tall Pines. Halder was tormenting them through the link."
"The boys call him Jay, but you call him Jayden. What should I call him?"
"Whatever you want." He kissed my forehead. "He is Jayden, but Jay is faster to say. You can call him anything you like and he will answer."
"Tell me more about Luke’s sister," I said after a moment.
