Girls surrounded them in a tight circle.

What those females doing withourmates?Lark snarled.

She was on the verge of taking over, and I was tempted to let her.

The smaller two girls were wolves, twins from the look of it, and most likely from the boys’ pack. They lingered in the back of the group with red faces and fidgeted nervously. The other three were human with perfect hair and makeup and outfits. They were tall and shapely, too, making me even more self-conscious of my short, too-thin body, ratty jeans and t-shirt, and little-girl space buns.

Wyatt say they cute, Lark reminded me, but she didn’t sound as certain as she usually did.

She was waiting for the boys to move away from the girls, or at least remember we existed.

Then one of the human girls smiled, put her hands on Cole’s chest, and ran her fingers all over him.

When he only stood there and didn’t push her away, I handed Lark the reins and sank to the back of my mind in utter anguish.

I knew it. I knew I wasn’t enough for them.

From my throat ripped a subvocal growl, one only a shifter could hear. I wasnotplaying, and now every wolf in the vicinity was aware of it.

Wyatt and Cole whined, and I heard Ash whimper from across the store. The two she-wolves had the brains to bare their necks as I flew over there and tore the girl’s hands off my mate.

"Mine!" I snapped.

"Oh, really?" The girl lifted one eyebrow and her gaze traveled from the top of my head down to my shoes, then she looked at Cole. "Babe, you may be sexy as sin, but your standards are lower than low ifshe’syour girl."

Posy might not know how to throw a punch, butIdid. The idiot girl was on the floor holding her nose in half a second, twin streams of blood trickling from her nostrils.

"Say what you want about me," I said through clenched teeth, "butno oneinsults mate!"

"Who do you think you are?!" screeched the girl.

She scrambled to her feet, but one of her human friends pulled her back before she could get in my face.

"Callie, Keeley, what kind of lunatics do you hang out with?" demanded the third human girl. "Who is this psycho?"

The she-wolves, Callie and Keeley, shot me an apologetic look and ran off.

"Hey! Where are you going?" shrieked Ms. Bloody Nose. "You can’t leave us! You’re our ride!"

The three human girls took off after the she-wolves, who I almost felt bad for. Why had they chosen such mean girls as friends?

Spinning around, I looked at my mates and saw their eyes aglow, Wyatt’s gold and Cole’s silver, as their wolves took over.

"It not what you think, my love." Granite approached me slowly with his hands up. "The she-wolves members of pack. They have question for boys."

"Then their human friends came over," Topaz went on, "and the boys didn’t realize what was happening until one touched Cole."

"Why he no do something?" I snarled.

"He was too shocked at first, and was about to push her away when you intervened."

I narrowed my eyes, unsure if I believed this story. I wanted to because I loved these wolves so much already, but there was someone other than myself to consider.

"Whether that true or not, Posyhurt. She worried you punish her because of what I do, so I tell you right now: If your dumb boys lay one finger on her in anger, I never forgive you.Never."
