Page 96 of Mates: Posy

"I’m sorry, darling," he murmured and covered our joined hands with his free one. "I don’t usually lose control like that, yet I’ve done so twice since I met you. I’m not making a very good impression on my new mate, am I?"

"I wouldn’t say that." I trailed my eyes down his body and back up. "I see a lot to be impressed with."

A wide grin spread across his face, and he opened his mouth only for Onyx to cut him off.

Feed mate NOW, Jul.

The werewolf king rolled his eyes at his own wolf, and I giggled.

"Come on, gorgeous. Let’s feed you so Nyx can stop his fretting."

23: Getting Comfortable

Posy

As the king shouted at Quartz with wolf-lit eyes, Mason wrapped an arm around my waist, lifted me up, and carried me to the other side of the living room.

"Call Quartz over here, baby," he murmured in my ear and set me on my feet.

I didn’t hesitate.

"Quartz? I need you."

He was in front of me in a flash, although he still snarled and had his lips pulled back from his long, sharp teeth.

Ash and Cole must have thought he was going to hurt me because they grabbed his ruff to pull him back. Quartz didn’t like that and shook them off, then whirled and tore a long gash in Ash’s arm. Horrified, I covered my mouth with my hands as Ash dripped blood everywhere until Sid could heal him.

Quartz snapped and snarled at Cole, trying to drive him and Ash back, and Mason swore under his breath.

"Can you command him like you did at dinner yesterday?" I asked as I kept my eyes on Quartz.

"Not once he’s in full control. All we can do now is wrestle him back into his cell and hope no one loses a limb in the process."

"Let me try." I pulled his arm away from my waist.

"What? No! He’ll hurt you without meaning to, sweetheart, and Jay will never be able to live with himself."

"He won’t hurt me."

I shook my head and went to kneel, but Wyatt stopped me by grabbing my elbow.

"You don’t know him. Not this version of Quartz. He’s deadly, Posy, and he’s not too particular about who he’s killing."

"He came when I called him," I disagreed. "He recognizes me as his mate, and he is not the kind of wolf that would ever hurt his mate."

"I’m not risking your life on a romantic sentiment!"

Frowning at him, I tugged my elbow out of his grip, then I went ahead and did what I wanted.

"Quartz?" I murmured and went to my knees. "Will you come to me, please?"

Before I knew it, my face was full of snow-white fur as he laid on top of me. My other mates all leapt forward, ready to save me, but Quartz only rested his head on my shoulder. His chest rumbled with growls, but I ignored that and threaded my fingers through his silky fur.

"Shh. It's okay now."

As I petted him, I hummed a song that I remembered my mother humming for me at bedtime. It was one of those old, wordless tunes that was both comforting and relaxing.

The growls quieted, and I nuzzled my face in his throat.
