I agree, of course.

When the brothers have left, I take out my phone and use the empty room to place my calls. First, I ring the newest member.

“What the fuck you playing at, Sharp?” I don’t give him a chance to greet me. “You said you’d keep an eye on Cyn.”

“We didn’t confiscate her phone. Didn’t think Susie might call her. But what’s the harm done? So Susie knows you’re alive, what of it?”

I’m angry, but still, I realise I wouldn’t have seen the danger myself. Who’d have thought Susie would hook up with Duke, or that a conversation with her and Cyn would expose Saffie to danger?

“Susie’s been seen with Duke.”

“Fuck,” he breathes out. “Niran, I’m so fuckin’ sorry. I’ll tell Cyn not to talk to her again.”

I snort. “You’d think she’d do anything you tell her?”

Sharpshooter chuckles. “I think there’s a chance.”

Good luck with that, Brother.“I’ve gotta speak to Lost.”

“Niran, before you do. Word of advice, before you blame, think rationally about what she’s done. She’s been kept out of the loop, and quite rightly. She received a phone call from a friend. All she did was tell her what she knew, that you were doing business with another chapter. How the fuck was she to know she shouldn’t say anything at all?”

Damn it.He’s right. “Point well made, Brother.”

We end with the normal salutations, then I tap my phone to my lips for a moment. Sure, Cyn’s disclosure puts us right in Duke’s sights. I fucked up by keeping shit from her. She can’t be trusted. No, but we could have told her both Saffie and I had died. But we never expected Susie to contact her.

Fuck it.

My call to Lost lasts longer. Once I’ve explained the position, he asks for clarification. “So if we assume Susie’s been ferreting out info on his behalf, Duke knows she’s not in San Diego.”

“Snatcher’s suggesting lockdown to the other chapters.”

Lost’s quiet for a moment. “We need to lockdown as well. He might not take Cyn’s word for it, and I don’t want to be taken unawares.”

I grimace. Lockdown is never welcomed by anyone in the club, but I’d rather my brothers were safe than sorry. We’ve got women and kids and I wouldn’t want them to get hurt.

Which reminds me. “Mary’s in the hospital.”

“Grumbler’s with her most of the time. I’ll also put a prospect on her for when he’s not,” Lost decides. “We’ll take care of ours, Niran. You take care of yours.”
