“Nah,” Peg answers for her. “My ol’ lady’s a firefighter who couldn’t get off shift. Sophie’s man’s the VP.”

“You’ve both got prosthetics?” I ask.

“Yeah.” Peg nods toward the building behind. “Good place this. They get you sorted damn quick.”

Bolt’s gesturing to us. He takes the handles of my wheelchair and starts to push.

“You drive up?” I ask conversationally as we move toward the entrance.

Not having to watch where I’m going, I turn as I speak, and notice the look of pain that crosses Sophie’s face.

“Nah,” Peg informs me. “We flew. Saves time.” He casts a look Sophie’s way, and his hand lands on her shoulder briefly.

There’s a story there, but I don’t press.

Instead of being a tedious wait, having company helps the time pass. While I’m talking bikes with Peg and Bolt, and the challenges of riding with various prosthetic parts, Sophie’s entertaining Saffie with tales of how she came to the United States, and stayed under the personal protection of Wraith, the VP of the Tucson chapter. When she’d first arrived, like I am now, she was confined to a wheelchair, and picked up the very non-PC handle Wheels. The only time Saffie’s smile slips off her face is when Sophie lovingly mentions her two little girls, but that’s only momentary, and no one other than me notices.

My visit is quite quick as I need no explanations. Wearing a prosthesis isn’t new to me, it’s just a case of choosing the style and being measured to ensure the cup will be the correct fit. Peg and Sophie are even quicker, having come to this place before.

With the formalities completed, we stop off in town to grab a quick meal. Peg and Sophie have a plane to catch, and we have a long drive back to the clubhouse.

When we part, Sophie tries to get me to promise to bring Saffie to Tucson.

I could see Saffie was embarrassed at the assumption Sophie made that I was truly her old man, and hard to decline without saying our relationship is in name only. That’s a matter I’m becoming more and more eager to change, but without a fucking clue how to go about it.
