Luka raised an eyebrow. “No, it won’t. You two are friends, right?”

Finn considered the question. All the texting lately, the way Rory was so happy to see him every morning… “Yeah, we’re friends.”

“If you could see the dumb smile on your face right now.”

Finn’s jaw flapped. “Fuck right off, Moreno!” was the best he could do before he stormed out of Luka’s office, leaving that asshole cackling to himself.

Chapter Nine

Maverick and Goose

Finn threw himself into the chair in Luka’s office. “I’m gonna do it.” He was. For sure. He had spent the weekend pep-talking himself while drinking scotch and carving inappropriate jack-o-lanterns for the party.

Luka tore his gaze from his computer screen. “Do what?”

“Ask Rory to wear a couples costume with me.” Finn’s heart pounded at the words.

Luka pressed his lips together for a moment. “That’s a great idea. Or you could just ask them out.”

Finn shook his head, drumming on his thighs. “No, this is okay. This is good. This is a step.”

“If you say so,” Luka said, smirking. “What costumes were you thinking?”

Finn rubbed his face. “I have no idea.” In between jack-o-lanterns, he had searched ‘couples costumes’ and checked out delivery times. It was slim pickings. “Maybe crayons?”

“Good God, please, no.” Luka frowned for a minute. “Daenerys and Jon Snow? You’d rock the blond wig, and Rory would look sexy in that cloak.”

“Fuck, no! Too coupley!” Finn waved the idea away. “And I can’t support that show after what they did to Dany… The Mandalorian and Grogu?”

Luka wrinkled his nose. “I’m thinking maybe no to the parent-child vibe? Plus those costumes would be crazy expensive if you’re going to get good ones. How about a classic—Batman and Robin?”

Finn shook his head firmly. “No tights.”

“Fine. What aboutDirty Dancing? Baby and Johnny?”

Finn raised an eyebrow. “And who’s going to want to wear those tiny shorts, me or Rory?”

“Good point.” Luka sighed and scrunched his face. “Goose and Maverick?”

Finn blinked at him, then a slow smile spread over his face. “You are a fucking genius! Flight suits are sexy, the inherent homoeroticism ofTop Gun… I love it!”

Luka offered a head tilt. “At your service.”

“Okay.” Finn stood and took a deep breath. “Now I gotta go ask them.”

“You can do it, Finn. You’re just suggesting costumes, not proposing.” Then Luka’s face clouded over. “Oh, and hey, if something does happen, make sure you go to HR right away.”

“Well, of course.” Finn rolled his eyes. “I’m not an idiot.” He didn’t need Luka to get uptight about Breakpoint’s strict employee dating policy. Besides, that was the least of his worries right now—first, he had to jump off a cliff. Finn took another breath, feeling it curl into the depths of his lungs. “You’re right, I can do it. Okay, here I go.”Oh God oh God oh God.What if Rory said no? What if Rory laughed at him and such a ridiculous idea?

“Finn?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re still here.”

“Fuck.” Finn shook himself and plunged out of Luka’s office while he had the momentum. He didn’t remember a thing about his journey through the halls until he was barging into Rory’s office.

Rory looked up and smiled.
