“You know it,” I joked.
He laughed and shook his head. “Ever since Megyn moved in with you, you jet out of here like your ass is on fire.”
I made a show of looking back over my shoulder, checking to see if my ass was in good shape. Brian groaned at my shenanigans and waved his hand at me. “Get out of here, man. Go be lame somewhere else.”
“I can’t help it,” I said. “I’ve been waiting so long to have someone to go home to. I can’t stop thinking about Megyn all day, looking forward to this moment.” I hesitated and looked back at my best friend. “It doesn’t put any extra weight on your shoulders or anything, does it?”
“I’m only teasing you, Carter. I know how much you love Megyn. Go be with her. You deserve it. Hell, if I was you and not so damn committed to my job, I’d be off on a vacation in the Caribbean or something. Sweden, if that’s more your style.”
“Not a bad idea.” I stroked my beard. “I do have something planned for tonight. It doesn’t involve a plane, though, and you and Maggie are invited.”
“What if Maggie and I have our own plans?”
I shrugged my shoulders at him. “Well, then Megyn and I will eat all the s’mores without you.” I started off for the door.
“Hold up,” Brian called. “You mean honest-to-god s’mores, right? Not those mushy things Antonio tried to make in the oven that one time?”
I confirmed, “Actual s’mores. I have a firepit now. It’s out on the beach and there are enough chairs for all of us.”
“Well, hot damn, a beach party. I’m pretty sure Maggie and I don’t have anything going on, so we’ll for sure be over.”
“Great! Just let us know when you’re on your way.”
“Will do.”
I took my leave and drove on towards home, my mood lifting the closer I came to being with Megyn. It was like the sun was coming out from behind the clouds, shining on me. This was what I had wanted all along, what I had dreamed of, and it felt so good.
I parked out in front of the house in a hurry and leapt out the door, and ran up the ramp to the porch. My heart beating fast and light in my chest, I threw the door open and jumped inside.
The house was warm and smelled of cinnamon and vanilla. I followed my nose to the kitchen and found Megyn bent over in front of the open oven. I came up behind her and took her butt in my hands. “Well, this is a nice surprise.”
Megyn wriggled her rear in my hands and then straightened, turning in my arms to kiss me. Her lips were even sweeter than usual. I licked them and tilted my head. “Cookie dough?”
“Chocolate chip,” she confirmed.
“You didn’t have to do any baking. We’ll have s’mores.”
“I wanted you to have something warm and tasty to come home to.”
I hugged her and kissed her again. “That’s nice, but what are the cookies for?”
Megyn giggled and swatted my chest with the palm of her hand. “You silly. They aren’t ready yet, I’m afraid. I didn’t get home as fast as I thought I was going to.”
I moved us away from the oven and pulled her close to my chest. “You were talking with your people again, right? It should have been both of them at the same time today.”
“It was,” she responded.
“And how did everything go?”
Megyn swayed in my arms. I moved with her, our bodies rubbing together as we danced. “Oh, Carter, it’s so amazing! They’re both so wonderful and so on-board with everything I want to do.”
“That’s fantastic!” I kissed her, delighted for her. “Tell me the details later, when Maggie and Brian are here. Oh, we’re having Maggie and Brian over for dinner and s’mores, if that’s okay?”
“I’d love that!” Megyn exclaimed. “I still feel bad that I kind of ruined our last double date we went on. I can’t wait to hang out with them.”
“Me, too.” I rubbed my lips on hers and then pulled away. “I’m going to go change.”
I had tried to pull away, but Megyn stayed wrapped around me, her body pressed to mine. “Where do you think you’re going without me?” she murmured. She grabbed onto my tie and pulled me in for a kiss, rubbing her lips over mine.
