Chapter Forty-Two

The wispand hiss of the ventilator fills the small hospital room as I look down at her. The bruises on her face have started to heal, as have mine, giving that yellowish hue to her skin that makes her look even worse off than she is. “You used your lifeline on a woman. I have to say, I’m a littlesurprised.”

“Me,too.”

“Where to now?” Kinkaid asks from thedoor.

“Not sure. Did you find out who she is?” I ask turning fromLara.

“Yep, daughter of Judge Carlo Baker. She went missing at age ten, father found dead in the home along with the maid and driver. No next of kin. Mother died years prior.” I nod knowing most of it but needing confirmation she had no one else.Maybe you should stay. I shake my head at my thoughts answering them. “You sticking around until she wakesup?”

“No.”

“Probably best. You are still a wanted man.” He comes closer, extending his hand, “Can’t say it’s been a pleasure but it’s been something.” I take his hand in mine and give it a good squeeze before he walks out the door. Tuning back to the bed I go to her side, placing her soft cold hand inmine.

“You have a good god damned life, Lara.” Keeping her palm in mine I lean forward and place a kiss on her temple, silently telling her sorry again for being such a fucking disappointment. Then I’m out the door, leaving the hospital and her—again. But now I know she will live, and I didn’t kill her this timearound.
