Page 338 of The Sinner: James

From the side, I shoot a glance in that direction as well.

“Come in,” James says.

The door opens, and a woman about my age walks in, her skin flushed to her hairline.

She doesn’t notice me if nothing else, because her eyes are trained on James’ face.

She wears heels and a business skirt suit. A curtain of hair slides down her back.

Her smile reads like an open book.

Smitten, she steps forward and stops in front of his desk. Her back is arched to the max, her bottom pushed out.

James hurls a glance at me, catching me studying her.

He locks my eyes briefly before raising his gaze to the woman before him.

“Yes?”

“Mr. Sexton… I was wondering if you could review my job assignment?”

“Assignment?” he asks, his eyes going back and forth between her and the paperwork he keeps signing.

“She’s an intern,” Lynn says.

“You said some of our projects might be reviewed by you personally, and I was wondering if you could look over mine,” the woman purrs.

“I did?” he asks, shifting his eyes to Lynn and waiting for a confirmation.

“A month ago when they started their projects,” his secretary comments.

James slips another glance at me and registers my frown.

Tilting my eyebrows up, I purse my lips, waiting for his response.

The moment of silence prompts the woman to glance over her shoulder.

She notices me.

“Hello,” she says softly.

I shift my eyes to James, saying nothing.

“Well. Someone else will do it,” James says, holding my gaze. “My secretary will assign you to one of the managers in charge.”

“Oh,” the woman gasps, visibly disappointed. “Thank you,” she mutters coldly this time.

She spins around and walks away. The door closes behind her when James flicks his eyes to me and then Lynn.

“How long has she been an intern with us?”

“She started at the beginning of the year.”

“Is she any good?”

“She’s one of the best.”

“Call Amanda in Human Resources and make her a job offer in the Department she’s best suited for. Then make sure she doesn’t walk into my office again.”
