“Yep.” I nod.
“This will be done today,” he says and continues on his way.
The elevator stops on my floor, and as I’m getting off, I see Sadie standing at the end of the hall.
“Sweetheart.” Sadie comes running into my arms. I lift her off the floor, and her legs come around my waist as I carry her into our apartment and through to the living room. I plop into my armchair, still holding her close.
My hands cup her face, and our eyes meet. “Found him, babe. Phoenix and Bull are delivering him to the police. He isn’t going to be able to hurt anyone for a long time,” I tell her.
She tugs on my hands and looks down at them. My knuckles are swollen. “Did you—” She starts, but I cut her off.
“He’s still breathing. We’ll let the police take it from here.”
“Are you going to get in trouble?” Her face is filled with concern.
“What for? He was so drunk, he stumbled and fell onto the pavement…a couple of times,” I say innocently with a grin.
She weaves her fingers into my hair. Her lips touch mine. “My hero,” she says with a satisfied smile.
Chapter10
I Got the Call
Sadie
Rebel is back to a regular schedule at work, and I plan on going back to work after the weekend. Rebel has transformed his office into a second bedroom for Mom and Dad’s visit. I’m nervous as heck about him meeting my parents, but Rebel seems to be taking it all in stride. Rebel’s already talking about getting a bigger apartment and has put us down for a two-bedroom with a den when it becomes available in the building.
“We can look at other apartment buildings, but this one has Phoenix, Kailyn, and Gertie,” he says as he helps clear the dishes from dinner.
“I prefer to stay. I like it here. Besides, how often do you think my parents are going to visit? Once, maybe twice a year?”
“Then we wait for the end unit down the hall to become available. One day, though, we might want to buy a place of our own,” he adds. “Wire built a log cabin just outside the city. He likes the quiet.”
“Wire seems to like his privacy.” I’ve met Wire several times. He has an awesome sense of humor and loves to tease his brothers, but there is something about him that tells me he’s lonely.
Rebel changes topics and asks, “Packing tomorrow?”
I pick up our coffees, hand him his mug, and lean against the counter. “Maya is going to give me a hand. Gertie’s coming along for the ride. I think she likes spending time with Hubert.”
“They speak the same language, babe. They understand one another,” Rebel agrees. “It’s good that they have someone their own age to talk to.”
“Hubert was able to sell a lot of the big furniture. The couch was secondhand and the end tables were crates that I covered with material to make them look pretty. The bed we brought over for Mom and Dad, so basically, its packing clothes, books, and stuff. It shouldn’t take too long.”
“You and Maya get started, and Bull and I will come later to load the boxes into our cars,” he says, then, in a stern voice, adds, “No heavy lifting, Sadie, you hear?”
“Yes, sir,” I reply with a salute.
“That’s two,” he says.
I tilt my head, confused. “Two what?”
“Two spankings.”
“Are you saving them up?”
“Waiting for the all clear from your doctor. I can’t wait to turn that delectable ass a pretty shade of red,” he counters with a devious smile. “But don’t worry, baby, you’ll like it the way I do it.”
I gasp with feigned shock. He laughs, hauling me flush against his hard body. “I’d never hurt you, Sadie. When we’re together, especially in bed, if there’s something you don’t like, you tell me, and I’ll stop.”
