Page 23 of Hawk

Hawk just nodded his head as I busied myself around the kitchen. I placed the pans on the stove and got to work. The kitchen was my haven; it made me feel at peace and right now I was all worked up from seeing Hawk here and knowing Lloyd would be back soon for revenge.

Potatoes were cut and thrown into the oven while I got to work on the next part. Hawk looked up as I sat a glass of orange juice on the table.

“How you feeling?”

I shrugged as I chopped the onion and bell pepper to add to the skillet.

“I’m okay. Sore, but it feels better when I get up and move.”

Hawk took a sip of the juice before eying me.

“Alright. Now tell me how you’re really feeling.”

I cracked open the eggs and tossed them into the skillet with the veggies.

“What the fuck do you expect? I’m in pain but there's nothing I can do about it.”

I stirred in the garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the mixture before chopping the tomatoes and adding them in.

“You could leave him so you never have to deal with that again.”

I turned to see Hawk casually drinking his coffee, sunglasses off, and those clear blue eyes boring deep into my own eyes.

Quickly turning away, I took the potatoes out of the oven and added them into the skillet. I let those mix in as I stirred, then removed the skillet from the oven.

“Yeah, well, I have no choice now. I called for help and now there’s no going back. He’ll kill me, Hawk.”

I wiped the small tear that escaped my eye and turned to dice the avocado and chop the scallions.

“I would never let him do that, Sav. I would do anything to protect you.”

I turned and looked at him. “But why?”

Hawk shrugged. “Because I care about you. I would do anything to protect all the women here. Nobody should be treated like that. But you? You have something special and I want to protect you at all costs.”

I turned and scooped the breakfast mixture from the skillet. I split it between two bowls then added the scallions and avocados on top. Sprinkling the top with some paprika, I set the bowls down on the table.

“Thank you. But I don’t need saving.”

Hawk laughed. “I know. I’m just here as backup, babe.”

I sat down and started to eat when I looked up at him. He was just staring at the bowl, mixing it around with his fork.

“What the fuck is this?”

“Sweet potato and avocado breakfast bowl. It’s good, just eat it.” He grumbled as he poked around the bowl. “It’s good for you and will help that nasty hangover.”

We both ate in silence until I broke it.

“Where’s Bambi? I wanted to talk to her today.”

Hawk looked up and smiled. “She had the twins yesterday. Two beautiful baby girls. You wanna meet them?”

I stood and grabbed both empty bowls and brought them to the sink. “I’m all set for now.” I turned to keep cleaning when Hawk stood and softly touched my arm.

“I’m here as a friend, Sav. This is me extending the olive branch to you. I know you and Bambi are close and she would love to have you come and meet the girls.”

I sighed and turned to look at Hawk. There was pure sincerity in his eyes as I stared deep into them.
