I took another bite and Doctor Tickner sat down on the stool with his clipboard.
“Alright dear. Question one. What is your name?”
I laughed before answering. “Savannah Brooks.”
“Perfect. Now question two. Do you know today’s date?”
I shook my head. “Um, I know it’s August?”
“That’s okay. Things have been a little crazy for you. Do you know where you are?”
I looked at Hawk before answering Doctor Tickner.
“In the Medical Center. I remember what put me here.”
He nodded before getting up and pulling down one of the old eye charts.
“Can you read me these letters, Savannah?”
“F, G, K, L, N, P, T.”
Doctor Tickner smiled as he sat back down.
“Memory and eyesight are good. Can we get you out of bed and do some physical tests?”
I nodded as Hawk helped me sit up and turn. Doctor Tickner came over and undid my various wires that connected to the monitors. Hawk held out both hands as I slowly moved to stand. My legs were shaky, but Hawk held me up.
Doctor Tickner smiled as he watched. “Good! Good, Savannah. Now can you try to walk across the room?”
Taking a deep breath, I held tight to Hawk as we made our way around the room. Soon I was walking around with no help. Hawk cheered as I sat back down on the bed.
“You did great, baby!”
I was breathing heavily as I laid my head back. “Why does it feel like I just ran a marathon?”
Doctor Tickner laughed. “You’ve been in bed for two days and with a major head injury. But you’re doing better than I expected.”
He came over to fix all the wires on me when I stopped him.
“Uh… could I go to the bathroom first before we hook me all back up?”
Doctor Tickner laughed. “Of course! Do you need any help?”
I shook my head. “I would like to try by myself.”
Slowly, I edged back off the bed with Hawk by my side. I shuffled to the bathroom and closed the door behind me, holding onto the railings on the wall.
I sat down and did my business before getting back up and heading to the sink. I looked up in the mirror and screamed. The door flew open and Hawk came running in.
“Baby, what’s wrong!?”
I shook and cry, backing away from the sink. I tumbled over my feet, but Hawk caught me before I fell to the ground.
“My... my... who was going to tell me?”
Hawk sighed and leaned against the wall with me in his arms, slowly sitting us both down.
“I told you about your hair, but I was waiting to tell you about your face…”
