“I’m worried about you. You work so damn much, Sav.”
I laughed and pointed my fork at him.
“I’m fine. This is good for me and I’m happy there. If I didn’t work, I would just hang around the apartment worrying every second of the day.”
Hawk shook his head. “I know, but I still can’t help but worry. I love you, Sav, and just don’t want anything to happen to you.”
I smiled and reached across to hold his hand.
“I love you. But I’m really fine. I’ve processed everything and Bambi set me up with a great counselor through Hope Hearted. The only thing I’m struggling with is your past…”
Hawk looked up at me and frowned. “My past? I thought we talked about it and you were fine with it.”
I sighed and squeezed his hand. “I am. I just... I want to know more. Why her? What happened to her? Do you regret making that choice?”
He got up and came around the table, lifting me up to place me right back in his lap.
“I just need to hold you while I talk about this. It’s all so fucking hard and still haunts me. I don’t regret my decision at all. She trusted me and I could help her for as long as I could.”
I gently rubbed his back as he continued on.
“Unfortunately, they murdered her after they found her in my cabin. They claim it was suicide, but I know they did it. She was gonna tell the world the dark secrets her family hid.”
I buried his head into the crook of my neck and I felt one lone tear fall from his eye. I wrapped my arms around him as I cried with him.
“I’m so sorry, babe. You don’t deserve to live with that lie.”
Hawk just shrugged as he sat up. “I made that choice and now I live with it. But I know I did everything in my power to help her. I just fucking hate that I couldn’t save her.”
“You did your best. They were gonna win no matter what. I know that feeling, Hawk. It’s just like Lloyd and his father. They are corrupt people who will stop at nothing to hide their dirty little secrets.”
There was a knock at the door, and Hawk went over, gun in hand. He looked through the peephole, then opened the door.
Moose came walking in and sat down at my little kitchen table.
“Sorry to interrupt your dinner. I just wanted to run some things by you before I got back to the clubhouse.”
Hawk came over and stood behind my chair with his hands on my shoulders. I smiled at Moose.
“What’s up, Moose?”
“I want you to help run the diner. Be part owner. Now before you say anything, just hear me out. You don’t have to buy in or anything crazy. I trust you and want to spend more time with my kids.”
I was shocked. I looked up at Hawk before turning back to Moose.
“That’s...wow. I’m so honored you would ask me. I know what a big deal that is. I don’t want to say yes and then something happens with the court case. So for now, let’s say a tentative yes.”
Moose grinned as he got up from the chair, coming over to hug me.
“I’m not worried about the case at all. We can even have some papers drawn up, so it’s all legal. I just want to spend less time there. I know it’s my job and shit, but my kids need me.”
I hugged Moose as we all walked to my front door. He turned and patted Hawk on the back.
“I’m really happy for you guys. Despite all the shit that you both went through, things are looking up.”
Hawk smiled. “They really are. I just needed this sassy woman in my life to keep me on track.”
I wrapped my arms around his waist as he kissed the top of my head.
