As I got inside, I flopped down on the couch just as the tears popped from my eyes.
Why did he still hide his past from me? What could he have done that was so horrible?
I shook my head and got up to find something to eat. There was nothing I could imagine him doing that would turn me away from him unless he had hurt a woman.
Digging through the cabinets, I found some of the chocolate bars Hawk had bought me. I grabbed one and went back to my living room.
I turned on the TV and flipped through the channels, finally settling on a cooking show. As I finished the chocolate bar, I laid back, pulling a blanket over me.
It had been a long day, and I was exhausted. I promised myself I would head to bed after the show…
Therewasaloudknocking on my door and I jumped up, looking around. I had fallen asleep on the couch, the TV still on.
The knocking got louder, and I looked at the clock to see it was two in the morning. I rushed to the door and looked through the peephole.
Hawk was leaning up against the railing of the small front steps. I slowly opened the door, and he looked up, moving closer to me.
I could smell the alcohol on him and took a step back. “You need to leave, Hawk.”
“I’m so sorry, baby. Fuck, I’m so goddamn sorry.”
I shook my head and looked at the mess of a man in front of me.
“Go home and get some sleep.”
I went to close the door when he put his foot in it, stopping me.
“Baby, my sweet little Savannah. I’m so fucking sorry. I really am. Please, can I stay tonight? I won’t even sleep in your bed. On the couch. I just…”
He looked back and I could see his motorcycle laying against the brick wall.
“You drove. Drunk. Again.”
Hawk nodded, and I sighed, moving aside to let him in. I grabbed some blankets and threw them on the couch, then went and grabbed a glass of water and some aspirin.
He laid back on the couch with his eyes closed and I gently kicked his leg to get his attention.
I handed him the glass of water and aspirin. “You’re gonna need this. See you in the morning.”
Walking back to my bedroom, I changed into a pair of yoga pants and a tank top, then climbed into my bed.
Just as I was closing my eyes, I heard the squeak of the floorboards and footsteps outside my door.
The door creaked open, and I looked up to see Hawk standing there in the soft light coming from the nightlights Luna had installed in the hallway.
“Hey, Sav?”
I sighed and sat up.
“What, Hawk? What could you possibly need now?”
He leaned against the door frame and gazed at me.
“I’m really sorry for the way I acted earlier. And uh... showing up drunk on your doorstep at two in the morning.”
“Thank you.”
Hawk still just stood there, staring at me.
