“There you go, mama. All fed and ready for bed again.”

Bambi smiled as she wrapped her arms around Harper. “You have kids, Hawk?”

Hawk’s smile disappeared as he inched toward the door. “Nope. Just been around a few growing up.”

“You’re really good with little ones, huh?”

Goose walked over and put his hand on Bambi’s shoulder. “Why don’t we put the girls down so you can get some rest?”

Hawk turned to me. “You ready to go?”

There was a cold undertone to his voice that made me very uncomfortable. “Uhm... sure.”

He whipped open the door without even saying goodbye. Bambi frowned, and Goose sighed.

“Babies are a touchy subject. Just tread around it, please.”

I nodded and made my way out the door. I headed down the stairs to find Hawk already sitting on his motorcycle. Without even looking at me, he handed me the helmet and waited until I got on to fly out of the parking lot.

I held on tight to him as he took sharp corners way too fast. I squeezed his waist and found those sharp blue eyes staring at me through the mirror.

Hawk slowed down, but then turned to go up toward the mountains. We climbed until we reached the small pull off. He stopped there to turn around back down the mountain.

I could see the whole town from up here and it was a gorgeous sight to see. Hawk clearly needed time to process earlier, and I wasn’t going to stop him. But we certainly were going to have a conversation when we got back to Hope Hearted.

Wehadfinallygottenback to Hope Hearted and Hawk had parked like a crazed person. Dirt and gravel spit up as he short stopped the motorcycle.

I hopped off the bike and tore my helmet off. Glaring at Hawk, He leaned on his bike and lit up a cigarette.

“Are you okay?”

Hawk just shrugged and took another drag. “I’m fucking tired. Did you just deliver two babies, drink two jugs of moonshine, then show up here to fucking play nice? No, I didn't think so.”

I was taken aback by his brash attitude. Hawk was normally flirty and sweet, but today I was seeing the dark side of him. It scared me and made me think maybe he wasn’t the man I thought he was.

“I think you should leave…”

“Yeah, good fucking plan.”

Hawk got on his bike and tore down the driveway, leaving me alone on the steps.

I sighed and turned to sit on the porch while I waited for the rest of The Devil’s Highwaymen to show up. A few minutes passed by when I saw the two huge black trucks rumbling up the driveway.

Thor and Maverick hopped out of each truck and smiled at me. Thor waved and walked over to me.

“You ready to go get your stuff, babe?”

I shrugged. “I guess. There isn’t much that I want there.”

“No biggie. We’ll get whatever you want. Come on, you can ride with me.”

The roar of a motorcycle came blaring up the driveway. Hawk stopped on the side of the truck and lit another cigarette up.

I followed Thor to the truck and turned to see Hawk glaring at me from his motorcycle. I climbed up and buckled into the seat before he could say anything to me.

Thor started the truck up and drove down the driveway and to the other side of town. We pulled up to Lloyd’s house and I could feel my heartbeat getting faster. My breathing became labored, and I felt clammy.

Thor got out of the truck while I just sat there. My vision went dark when I felt two big hands on me.
