“Can you answer the questions, Ma’am?”
I sighed. “No, I did not see a face. I told you, I saw red hair. Fran is the only one who has red hair that I know and Eckhart Wiedermann is the only person who would want to hurt me. We had an open case against his son…”
Lily clapped her hands and moved toward the officers.
“My client was in the process of pressing charges against Lloyd when he broke his restraining order and tried to attack her. She acted in self-defense, and it didn’t end too well. Eckhart was at the scene and has quite the grudge against her now. So I suggest looking into him and this Fran girl.”
The one officer closed his little notebook and looked between Lily and I.
“Eckhart would never do something like that.”
Lily marched right up to him and put her hands on her hips.
“Glad to see you’re so neutral about the situation. Why don’t you come outside with me so we can call your supervisor?”
“Uh, I don’t think that’s necessary, Ma’am.”
Lily threw her head back and laughed.
“It wasn’t a suggestion, Officer. Outside, now.”
He and Lily made their way into the hallway and the other officer sighed and looked at me.
“I’m very sorry about everything that has happened. Between you and me, Lloyd got what was coming to him. I promise you I will look into Eckhart and Fran. I’m sure they’re working together.”
I smiled up at him. “Thank you, Officer.”
He nodded and headed outside. I turned to Hawk and pulled him down onto the bed with me.
“Just lay with me. Today has been too much for me. I’m so tired.”
“Anything for you, baby.”
We laid there until my eyes shut. My life had fallen apart, but my man was there to pick up my pieces.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Hawk
Onemonthlater,
Savannah was finally out of the hospital and back home. Her face was slowly healing, and I had ordered about a dozen wigs for her.
After they released her from the hospital, Savannah begged me to move in with her. For me, it was a no brainer. I would do anything for my woman.
We had installed new cameras and an alarm system in her apartment and a complete renovation of the living room.
Luna had come in with some bundle of shit to ‘cleanse’ the space or whatever. But Savannah seemed to think it helped, so I just went with it.
She still struggled with her self-esteem and fell into some deep depression episodes. Those days were tough, but I sat by her side through it all. Willow, Mav’s Old Lady, had researched art therapy and was now doing some one-on-one classes with Sav. The entire community had come together to help Savannah out.
She also struggled with migraines and we were finding ways to control them. They knocked my poor woman off her feet for days. Lilah was working on finding some natural remedies to deal with them.
Gracie was back at work already and had been begging Sav to come back. She wasn’t quite ready to go back, but Moose was fine with that. Her position at the diner was still available whenever she was ready.
One thing Savannah did push for was going to college online. She didn’t want to go to an actual class, so I helped her sign up online. Savannah was going for business, so she could better run the diner. My woman was so fucking smart and already had all A’s.
Today was one of Sav’s rougher days. We were both sitting on the couch in the dark while the TV softly played in the background. Sav was curled up on my lap under a weighted blanket while I rubbed her head.
