The right half of my face was pink, puckered, and angry looking. It stretched from my nose down to my chest. It was ugly, and I didn’t even look like myself.
I wailed as Hawk held me on the cold bathroom tile floor. He carefully picked me up and carried me back to my bed as I cried even more.
Instead of sitting in the chair next to me, he cuddled behind me in the bed. I turned away from him, but he pulled me back to face him.
“Never hide from me, Savannah.”
I shook my head as more tears ran down my ugly face.
“Please, just go. I don’t want you to even look at me. I have no hair and half my face is burned. I can’t live like this.”
Hawk tilted my head up to look into his eyes.
“Stop it right now. Hair can grow back and I already told you I would buy all the wings your pretty heart desires. And your face is still beautiful to me. You sacrificed your life to save Gracie, and that is truly incredible. But we can look into facial surgery in the future and I bet the woman can help with make-up. I already looked it up.”
“You what?”
Hawk laughed and softly kissed me.
“I’ve already looked up all of this. Baby, I got you.”
I traced my fingers down his cheek.
“How did I get so lucky? God, I love you.”
Hawk leaned down and gently kissed me.
“And I love you, Sav.”
There was a knock on the door, and Hawk got up to open it. Lily came walking in with two police officers behind her.
“Hey, Savannah. Are you ready to do some talking?”
I shrugged, “I guess.”
She smiled as she pulled the chair up next to me. Hawk stood on the other side, holding my hand.
The two officers stood at the bottom of my bed. “Alright, we just have a few questions. We don’t want to keep you too long.”
I nodded. “Let’s just get this over with, okay? Take the kiddie gloves off and ask me what you need to fucking ask.”
The officers awkwardly shuffled their feet and gazed down at their shoes.
“Uhm... can you just go through your day at the diner? Anything odd that sticks out?”
I laid my head back and took a deep breath.
“Nothing odd other than the fire and being attacked. Normal day, Moose had left early, leaving me in charge. We stayed open later than normal. Just a few passing truckers before we closed up. Fire started in the back. Went out front and there was fire there. Explosions. No escape. Then somebody grabbed my leg and hit my head. They had red hair. That’s all I remember.”
The one officer was writing everything down. The second officer tapped the end of the bed.
“Anything else? Did you see a face? Who wants to hurt you?”
Lily stood and glared at the officer.
“Let’s take it easy there, officer. She’s the victim here.”
He frowned at Lily before turning back to me.
