There was a slight screech and the next thing I knew, there was another bottle coming right over the counter. I dove on top of Gracie to protect her. The bottle landed and then exploded, sending everything around us flying into the air while more fire roared.
“Gracie! Move toward the-”
A hand wrapped around my ankle, pulling me back before smashing something cold and hard against my temple. I tried to look back, but the smoke hid the person's face. They dragged me further into the diner, away from any escape. My head was spinning, everything was blurry, but I could make out the faint red hair as my world went dark.
Chapter Twenty-Six
Iwaswatchingashow when I heard the sirens coming down main street. Getting up, I looked out the window of Sav’s apartment to see an enormous cloud of smoke and an orange hue coming from the diner.
I ran out the door when my phone started ringing. I answered it and screamed, “Something’s wrong at the diner!”
I could hear the sirens on the other end of the phone as Moose tried to talk.
“I know! It’s on fire! The girls are inside!”
My heart stopped, but my legs kept going. My woman was in trouble and I needed to get to her. I slammed the phone back into my pocket and ran as fast as I could to the diner.
As I ran around the corner, I could see the entire building was up in flames. I tried to run in, but Moose’s arms wrapped around me.
“It’s too dangerous!”
I tried to pull away from him, but there were more hands on me, holding me back. I turned to see my brothers holding me back.
Moose pointed to a firefighter with a lifeless body slung over his shoulder. He brought the body to an ambulance, and I rushed over.
Looking down, I could see it was Gracie. She slowly opened her eyes and cried.
“I tried... she’s gone, Hawk. She saved me…”
Gracie’s eyes fluttered shut as the EMTs pushed me out of the way. Turning back around, I saw another firefighter carrying Savannah out of the building.
He ran with her in his arms, as more came running out, shouting to get back. There was a rumble, and then the diner exploded. Debris flew everywhere as everybody ducked to avoid getting hit.
I fell to the ground as the explosion made my ears ring. I looked up to see people running, but the world was silent. Their mouths were moving, but I couldn’t hear a fucking thing.
Moose came running over, and I could tell he was trying to tell me something. I pointed to my ears as he helped me up.
“Can’t hear!”
He grabbed my arm and pulled me toward one of the ambulances. The ringing started back up, and then I could hear muffled voices.
The EMTs started cleaning my head, and I reached up to find blood. They pushed my hand away as they bandaged me up.
Their muffled voices slowly sounded closer, and then I could finally hear them. I turned to Moose as I pushed the EMT’s away.
“Where’s Sav?”
Moose shook his head as a tear fell from his eye.
“They took her to the medical center... it doesn’t look good, Hawk.”
“No! No! She can’t be dead!”
Moose wiped the tear away as he led me away from the wandering eyes.
“Let’s just get to the medical center. I’m so fucking sorry…”
The prospect was waiting with a truck as Moose and I silently climbed in. He drove as fast as he could and parked right out front of the main doors.
