“Eat dinner first then you can have your cake.”

He growled but started to eat his tuna. I opened the bag of beef jerky and ate a few pieces before grabbing some tuna.

Orion and I ate in silence, the only noises coming from the crackling fire and the woods around us.

As we finished up, I let Orion go run in the woods as I put the fire out. I cleaned up and made a quick lap around the building. It was pitch black out and no signs of any other life. I knew Lilah said to stay close to the public, but I would be fine.

Orion came back and we headed into the van for the night. I made sure we were all locked up and texted Lilah my coordinates.

I turned on the little battery-powered lantern and sat on the bed with Orion. He curled up at the end of the bed and I could see his breathing start to slow. I smiled as he peacefully slept.

Looking around the van, I started to miss the comforts of Maverick’s home. As much as I loved living in my van, nothing beats a comfy home. I never knew what I wanted until I showed up at The Devil’s Highwaymen.

Those damn tears started to drop down my cheeks again as I laid my head on the pillow. I pulled the blanket around me and tried to close my eyes. Visions of Maverick flooded my brain and the tears started to fall harder.

I let them fall until I couldn’t cry anymore. With a broken heart and dried eyes, I drifted off to sleep.

Chapter Twenty

Maverick

Drink after drink, shot after shot. I tried to numb the pain of losing Willow. I knew I fucked up, I knew it was all my fault, but for the life of me, I couldn’t find the words to bring her back.

“Erik, get me another shot.”

The Prospect behind the bar gave me a sympathetic look and grabbed a glass of water. He brought it over and placed it in front of me.

“Drink it, Mav. You’ve had too much to drink already.”

“Fuck off. Get me the whiskey, Prospect.”

He shook his head and walked away from the bar. I grumbled and tried to get up from the barstool.

Stumbling, I made it behind the bar and grabbed the bottle of whiskey. I leaned up against the bar and popped the top off. I took a huge gulp and leaned my head down.

“Not a great look for the VP.”
