“I love you too, beautiful.” Closing my eyes, I dreamed of falling asleep like this every night with my new gorgeous fiancée. My sweet Little Lark would be mine forever.
Chapter 21
Lilah
Iwoke up to Striker’sarms around me, the blankets flung off the bed, and the smell of smoke. Sitting up in bed I quickly looked around, looking for whatever was making that smell. “Striker, wake up! Something is on fire!” I shook him as he rubbed his eyes, slowly sitting up. I hopped out of bed, running around the apartment to find my clothes. “Striker, get up now! There’s a fire!”
I found my sneakers and started to tie them when he emerged from the bedroom, looking like he was ready for anything. I could see him adjusting his gun in the holster on his back. He grabbed his club vest and threw it on. “Lilah, stay here and let me check it out first. I can hear the fire trucks coming.”
I threw open the door and turned to Striker, “Yeah fucking right. If someone is hurt they need me. Let’s go.” We ran down the stairs and around the front of the clubhouse.
The entire auto shop was up in flames. I looked over at Striker. His eyes had gone cold and he had a serious look on his face; the face of a man about to take charge. “We need to make sure everybody is safe, let’s go.”
We ran over to the rest of the club members and they all turned and looked at Striker. He was in full on President mode, eyes cold, no emotion except that alpha male look.
I heard Billy screaming from behind me, “Lilah! Wrench is in there!” I turned and ran toward the burning building, Striker was yelling behind me.
“Lilah, get back here!” I flew into the open garage bay, calling out his name.
“Wrench! Wrench, where are you?” I frantically searched all over the garage, the smoke was getting thicker and thicker. “Come on you sonofabitch!” I turned toward the back office and saw his lifeless body laying on the ground. His head was bleeding and his breathing was labored. “Shit!’
I ran over to him and started to assess his injuries. Everything seemed okay enough to move him. I grabbed underneath his armpits and slowly dragged him toward the open garage bay doors. I was coughing and tears were forming in my eyes from the heavy smoke. The weight of Wrench’s lifeless body was unbearable. I was struggling and wasn’t sure how much further I could make it.
“Lilah!” Striker was coming through the garage bay and I screamed out a cry. Tears of relief started running down my face. He grabbed Wrench under the arms and dragged him to safety.
“He’s got a laceration on his head! Get the ambulance here now. I’m going to grab my medical kit from the truck. Stay with him and try to get him awake! If his breathing stops, start CPR.” I looked at Striker, his face was pale and he looked panicked. “Levi! Snap out of it. Look at me and listen.”
He turned to me and I could see the color coming back to his face. “I heard you. Okay I got it. Go, baby girl. Go do your thing.”
I stood up and ran toward my truck. Finally, I made it to the truck, which was parked behind the clubhouse. I ripped open the door and started searching for my medical bag. I looked everywhere and couldn’t find it. “Where the fuck is my bag!” I climbed over the seat to see if it had gotten pushed underneath the driver's seat. All of a sudden I heard a crash as the driver side door was ripped open.
“Looking for this, sweetheart?” I looked up and saw my ex, Danny, standing there with my medical bag in his hand.
“You! You did all of this!” He threw his head back and laughed, an evil laugh.
“Oh my, Lilah. I told you I would come for you. But you didn’t listen. You never did listen very well. I told you things would get bad, I told you to stay away from that animal. And now look, you got his little friend killed. Too bad it wasn’t him.” I lunged at Danny, my hands reaching for his throat.
