When I'm satisfied with my hair and makeup, at least to the level I know I'm capable of, I go and search my closet for an outfit. I snag the new pair of overalls off the hanger and look them up and down. They aren’t sexy, but they are short overalls, and that's a lot more skin than I normally show.
I check myself over in the mirror, giving my hair a little fluff. I'm not sure it really does anything, but Liv always makes me do it, so I’m sticking to her usual plan.
When I grab my phone off the charger, I see a few missed calls and texts from Sawyer. I’m not always the best when it comes to checking my phone.
Sawyer: Where are you?
Sawyer: You better show up.
Sawyer: If you don't respond to me, I'm coming over there, and if that means I miss the auction, then so be it.
I'm about to text him back when the phone starts to vibrate in my hand. Sawyer's name flashes across the screen, and I answer it.
"I'm coming!"
"You better not be," Sawyer responds.
Damn. What the hell did I do? "So now you don't want me to come?"
"Kitten," Sawyer groans. "Yeah, I want you to come."
"But you…" I trail off, slow on the uptake. I expect Sawyer to chuckle at me, but instead I only hear his heavy breathing through the line. My nipples tighten at the sound. Only Sawyer could make breathing sexy. “Sawyer?”
“I’m here. Just hurry, Lane.”
“All right.” I let out a laugh.
“It’s not all right. Tell me you’ll be here,” he orders.
“I’ll be there,” I respond without thinking. Kind of like my freaking nipples.
“Good girl,” Sawyer says before ending the call.
I stare at my phone. Did he really just call me a good girl? A smile spreads across my face, and it’s another reaction I can’t control. If Sawyer was here, I would have masked it with an eye roll.
“What is wrong with me?” I ask the empty room before I huff and grab my keys.
When I make it to City Hall, the event is in full swing. By the look of things, I’m guessing most of the town is here tonight. There are items that will be live auctioned and others that are part of a silent auction where people can write down their bids.
I glance around the room looking for the china cabinet since it’s part of the silent auction. I was the one that asked for it to be auctioned off this way because I wasn't sure how I'd do if I had to watch it in real time. Would it be terrible if I bid on it myself? It's all about the money, right? As long as they get the money, everything should be fine.
As quickly as I can, I circle the room but can't find it anywhere. I try once again and go slower the second time, thinking I missed it. Slowing down turns out to be a mistake because people stop and talk to me. A lot of them are asking about my sister and Julius, and I’m reminded this town is straight nosy. I guess I can’t be too mad about it since Liv and I enjoy the gossip. I guess the problem is that before now it wasn’t typically about us.
I'll need to find Evie and see what's going on. It might have gotten left in the back by mistake and needs to be brought out. I'm tempted to stand on a chair since my short stature is not helping me find anyone.
If Liv were here, she'd stand up on one and shout out for Evie. I'd want to crawl under a table, but now that Liv isn't here, I’m seeing how much I miss her antics. At least now it would be rather helpful.
"You're here." Sawyer spins me around to face him, and I can see the relief in his eyes.
"I'm here,” I confirm.
"Bid on me." The hands he has on my shoulders squeeze in a tight hold.
"Sawyer—" I start to say, but he’s shaking his head.
"I only want you to win me."
"Because you know I won't jump your bones?" I tease. Kinda.
