Chapter One

LANE

Why the hell is it so freaking hot? I love my twin, but I’m going to turn into our dad and install a lock on the thermostat. As I rub the sleep out of my eyes, the fog in my brain begins to clear. Memories of yesterday, and more specifically last night, come flooding back.

My sister was sad, and I was trying to cheer her up. She talked me into going to Dixon’s, one of the only bars in our small town. I knew that would perk her up, so I agreed. Liv loves going out while I’m the one who tends to stick close to home. That’s how it’s always been, but I think things are about to change. My sister is madly in love, and it’s going to be strange not living together any longer. With how she feels about Julius, I can see the writing on the wall.

“Laney.” A hand slides over my stomach, and I completely freeze. “You need to stop wiggling your ass on my dick.”

I let out a small gasp. What the hell?! I know that voice. Hell, I’ve known it most of my life. Am I so hungover that I didn’t notice someone else in bed with me? Let alone him.

“Unless you want me to do something about it.” He brushes his mouth against my ear. “You only have to say the word, kitten.”

“Sawyer.” I whisper his name, and his fingers flex against my stomach. He’s pressed to my back, and I realize this isn’t one of my dirty dreams. Dreams I would never admit to anyone. Not even my sister, and we tell each other almost everything.

“Right here.” His breath tickles the hair on my neck. How the hell did he get here?

Shit, he walked me home from the bar last night. Then he came inside, where he cooked me something to eat before giving me water and a couple of Advil to help with my hangover. I got more than tipsy last night, which is not like me. Far from it, actually.

"Why are you in my bed?" I grit out.

"Well, it started when you brought up some wild court case and the trial you’ve been streaming. Then you went on and on, and before I knew it, we were lying in your bed. That’s when you were showing me videos of timelines and evidence."

"It is wild, isn't it?!" I roll over, and it’s a mistake.

My breath hitches when my eyes meet Sawyer's. They are an unforgettable dark blue. I swear, in the light, they can change, but it's not his eyes that have me this time. It's his bare chest and unruly hair.

"It was something all right." His too-handsome face is adorned with a sexy smile that accentuates his perfectly white teeth and dimples. They fit him because the man is perfect; that’s what the whole town thinks. He's the hot gossip around these parts.

So this is what the women he's slept with wake up to. The thought shouldn't piss me off, but it does.

"Your hair is a mess." I sink my fingers into it and tug.

"Damn, kitten. You getting kinky this early in the morning?"

I narrow my eyes on him. "Pass. I don't want to catch anything."

"We learned about safe sex in high school, Laney."

Of course I remember; he sat right next to me! I also remember he stole the condom I was given after passing the course. Everyone got one, and he reached over and took mine. To this day, it still makes me mad. Did he bang another girl with my condom!?

“Although that doesn’t really matter.” He shrugs, and I feel his hand on my hip. “Because when I get inside you, there isn't going to be anything between us."

"You did not say that." I shove my hands against his bare chest, but he doesn't budge an inch. No shocker there. The man holds the state record for bull riding. He has since he was freaking fifteen. The only person to beat his record is himself.

"I'm going to start saying a lot of things." Sawyer leans in close. "Your time’s up, kitten."

Before I know what’s happening, he presses his mouth to mine in a hard kiss. It’s over almost as quickly as it started, and I blink at him. Did he just steal my first kiss?

Sawyer rolls to the other side of the bed, getting up. I’m unable to look away as he pulls on his jeans, but he doesn’t button them closed. “I’ll make breakfast.”

With that, he strolls from my bedroom and leaves me reeling. It takes me half a second to come back to reality.

“Maybe you should put on a shirt!” I shout after him.

Sawyer pops his head in the doorway, grinning like the Cheshire cat.

“All right then, kitten. Hand it over.” He holds his hand out, and I glance around the floor, not seeing it. "Look down, babe."
