We finished up with the pallet, and dumped the produce then returned the truck before we finally headed back home. It was still only morning, but all I could think about was my bed.
* * *
Sierra met us at the house, and Bea began making everyone breakfast.
“They didn’t even seem to notice,” Sierra told us.
“Everything was getting put into cold rooms,” I nodded, “they probably won’t even realise until tomorrow,” I yawned.
“Big night?” Sierra pulsed her eyebrows suggestively.
I nodded.
“She was out with the new Don,” Bea said in a sing-song voice.
“Wait, you left with him?” Livie squeaked.
“Yes,” I snapped, “nothing happened though. Diana wants me to get back into The Family’s good graces.”
Bea put a mug in front of me, and poured coffee into it. I groaned with pleasure as I took the first sip, “thank you.”
There was a knock at the door, and a moment later it opened. Gwen smiled as she let herself in, her red hair was tied back into a low bun and she had a bare face, which was a huge difference from her usual put-together self.
Bea and I’s apartment served as almost community housing for the girls at Lilith’s, and‘Bea’s Big Breakfasts’had become tradition over the years. All of the girls felt comfortable here, and always had a place to come. Though I didn’t always enjoy having a full house, it made me happy that we had created this family of our own. Gwen joined Bea in the kitchen, and she leaned against the counter and picked at the food.
Another knock on the door, and I rolled my eyes.
Jesus.
Livie jumped up and opened it.
“Oh my god!” she squealed.
I lifted my head and saw a man standing at the door with a huge bunch of blood-red coloured flowers. All of the girls drifted towards the door to investigate. Livie accepted the flowers and slammed the door in the poor delivery man’s face, as she rummaged through the bouquet and pulled out a note.
“What does it say?” Sierra asked impatiently.
“It’s just a phone number,” she frowned, “on the back it just says ‘Rome’.”
I frowned, “what?”
I scoffed, storming over to the herd of girls and snatching the card out of Livie’s hands. Her and Bea shared a look.
I shook my head.
“Motherfucker,” I said through gritted teeth. I stormed to my bedroom, and the girls followed closely behind me. I found my phone lying on my bedside table and dialled the number as everyone trickled into my room.
“Out,” I mouthed, shooing them.
Bea rolled her eyes, flopping herself onto my bed, “yeah, right.”
The phone rang only once.
“Good morning,” Antoni said.
“How do you know where I live?” I snapped.
He only chuckled, a dark and husky sound that I was getting accustomed to.
