“I see why Cole wants to kill you sometimes.” Rhet states.
Dax ignores Rhet and reaches for my hand to kiss it.
“I love you like a brother, but I am not as patient as Cole,” Rhet sneers as Dax drops my hand.
“Nice to meet you, Zeeta.” He chortles evilly, then salutes me with two fingers and leaves
“You too, Dax.” I smile at him.
Rhet turns to me, “Look, Zeeta.”
“Nah, save it until tomorrow. Please let go of my hand or I will cause a scene.” My smile drops and I try to pull away.
I mean it. He releases my hand. “I’m sorry.”
Joji’s “Slow Dancing In the Dark” begins to play.
“Dance with me?” Rhet asks.
I look back at York as he talks to an older lady. He looks up and winks at me.
“Please,” Rhet pleads, his hand reaches out to me.
I walk past him and make my way to the center of the dance floor.
He follows me, takes my hand in his and pulls me slowly to his body. He rests his hand right above my butt.
We feel perfect, we move in harmony. Unlike Dax, there’s no fancy steps, just rhythm and chemistry. He smells of musk and leather. I inhale as we rock slowly.
Both of us have so much to say, yet we sway, enjoying this little reprieve we offer to each other.
My body begins to feel heavy and heated, as he pulls me closer to his chest. Until his chin, rests against my forehead.
He takes my hand and pulls it closer to his chest. For a moment, everyone around us is gone.
“I’m sorry,” he says.
I nod, not wanting to break the spell.
“I miss you,” he whispers in my hair.
“I’m always around, Rhet.” I grip his shoulders tighter
“No, I miss us.”
I realize he’s talking about us on an intimate level.
“I know, but I want to belong to someone, not be shared and forgotten.” I pull back to look into his cold blue eyes.
“Maybe we should talk.” Rhet’s face searches mine
“York is my boyfriend now. There’s nothing to talk about.” The lies I tell. However, York did ask me via text, but I said no. I only want to be friends.
“Fuck York,” Rhet grunts.
“No, he has been nothing but sweet to me.”
“Fuck him, Zeeta,” he grumbles, his hand tightening on my body.
