Was Blaine still going to ask Escala?

Jealousy scoured Wayden’s insides.

“Are you asking for you and your omega?” Escala asked, shaking Wayden from his thoughts. “I smelled you on him, but it was faint.”

You touched Blaine, even though he smelled like me! The possessive thought ripped through Wayden’s mind. He automatically moved towards Escala, his instincts taking over. Wayden caught himself before he did something stupid, like punch the alpha in the face.

Wayden took a deep breath and stepped away. For the second time he was grateful he wasn’t an aggressive alpha, or he would be challenging Escala right about now. It was all stupid because Blaine was the worst omega to fight for. The omega would probably laugh at him and accuse Wayden of being old fashioned, domineering and all the other bad things Blaine believed alphas were.

“It’s…”

“Complicated,” Escala laughed and started to walk again. Wayden sighed and followed him. “Like I said, it’s far more complicated than that. It’s hard to explain. I need them. And when they wear my scent, they feel like mine. Their needs are mine. And I would do anything for them.”

Had Blaine felt like his last night?

Wayden trembled. He’d felt a lot of things last night, some of which he’d rather not think about.

Back to work then? Wayden mulled over what Escala had said.

“It must have been hard on the first alpha king and the council of alphas having to cut themselves from pack life to save everyone,” Wayden said.

“I guess. I can’t imagine cutting myself from my pack. I would go crazy,” Escala said, visibly cringing.

Wayden nodded in agreement. The disconnect in their society happened a long time ago. No wonder things were going downhill now.

The wind suddenly picked up as they got closer to the huts. The alphas and betas ahead of them stopped and looked at Escala for guidance. They had to skin and clean their kill before storing it and they couldn’t do that outside, not with the weather turning bad. Escala pointed them to the main hut.

“The cooking station is big enough,” he shouted, rushing towards them. Wayden followed Escala to the main hut. He stepped through the door and stopped as the most delicious scent filled his lungs. Wayden didn’t have to be told where it came from. He just knew.

It was him… his omega was in heat. Not stopping to think too hard about what he was doing, Wayden walked deeper into the hut, heading for Blaine.

Time slowed down. The hut suddenly went silent. Wayden could feel eyes on him, but he didn’t care. He was too focused on Blaine. The omega gasped as he grasped his arm and pulled him to his feet.

“Come,” Wayden commanded. He turned and walked out of the hut, with Blaine in tow. The cold wind whipped their clothes every which way, stronger than before. “Walk behind me,” Wayden shouted, using his body to block Blaine from the harsh wind.

Blaine’s free hand came to Wayden’s back, gripping his coat. Wayden swallowed hard as desire rushed through him. He tightened his fingers around Blaine’s wrist, as if the wind would snatch the omega away from him. Snowflakes started to fall from the sky just as they came to the shuttle. Wayden opened the door and walked inside. Blaine was so close behind him he could feel the omega’s breath on his neck. Fuck. He wanted nothing more than to pull him towards the room, but he knew they had to talk.He couldn’t act like the very thing Blaine hated: a controlling and domineering alpha. Even though he’d behaved like that a few minutes ago.

Not Wayden’s proudest moment, but fuck… when Blaine’s scent had hit him, Wayden had lost all his senses. That wasn’t an excuse, though.

Wayden closed his eyes for a second and then let Blaine go. He took a couple of steps away from Blaine then turned around to face him.

“You’re in heat.”

“Yes,” Blaine said. He bit his bottom lip, looked down at his feet and, when he looked up again, Wayden couldn’t stay away. He moved closer to him.

“Do you want me to help you with your heat?” Wayden swallowed hard as his throat constricted, making it hard to breathe or speak. The fucking air around them was charged with something electric; he felt it along his skin. Wayden was so turned on that all he wanted to do was drag Blaine to his room. Wayden balled his hands into fists so he wouldn’t reach for the omega. “Blaine?”

“Please,” Blaine said breathlessly. The simple word did things to Wayden. He reached for Blaine, wrapped his fingers around his wrist, a possessive feeling churning within him.

Fuck. He felt dizzy.

“Come,” Wayden said, walking to the room. He closed the door behind them. There was no turning back now. Wayden knew their relationship would change forever. He just hoped the change would be good.

Hope bloomed inside him at the thought. Wayden shoved it away. Falling in love was a risk he couldn’t take. Not with Blaine, anyway. Maybe another omega.

Blaine was unpredictable. There was no telling what he’d do once his heat was over.

“Wayden?” Blaine pulled on his hand, waking him from his depressing thoughts. Wayden looked down at the omega as he realised he’d been standing there, doing nothing. “Is everything okay?” the omega asked.
