Blaine growled at Owen. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”

The omega nodded without remorse. “You’re a stubborn little thing. You’re like a hard fruit you need to open up to get to the good stuff. You don’t have to make everything so hard. Come. Let’s go make food for your heat.”

Blaine shook his head. He wasn’t going to prepare anything for his heat. That was just weird. He and Wayden were not a couple, sharing each other’s heats. The alpha was helping him out. They didn’t need all that fluff. “We have food in the shuttle. I’ll prepare something when we need to eat.”

“Okay,” Owen said. “Are you going to wait for him here?”

“Do you mind?” Blaine asked. He hoped the omegas didn’t mind his sweet scent because he couldn’t imagine himself waiting for Wayden in the shuttle. He’d go crazy overthinking everything.

“No. Peri is also starting his heat today,” Owen said pointing to another omega in front of the fire pit. “He’s also waiting for his alpha. We don’t mind it. Our omegas don’t have to hide themselves when they’re in heat like you do in the capital.”

“We don’t hide,” Blaine mumbled. “We’re…”

“Don’t even say it. We know what’s going on in the capital. We’ve heard the stories. It’s not like that here. Alphas only react to omegas who show interest in them. They won’t react to you just because you’re in heat. Omegas choose their alphas, you know that, right? Your scent won’t entice them because you don’t want them. And since you have an alpha, only he’s going to smell your scent.”

He’s not my alpha! Blaine wanted to shout.

Owen took Blaine’s hand and dragged him to the fire pit. “To be honest, I’m a little jealous. Your alpha is hot. Those tattoos on his arms and that body, fuck…” Owen hummed appreciatively. Blaine swallowed a snarl as a possessive feeling bubbled deepinside him. He balled his hands into fists, fighting the urge to put his hands on Owen.

Fucking heat. Now he was possessive of Wayden. Blaine shook his head, shaking off the feeling. He found a chair and sat down to wait for Wayden. The chatter from the omegas distracted him for a while. But a smouldering fire burned deep inside him. He was going to break apart soon. Blaine closed his eyes and willed his body to calm the fuck down.

Wayden is not going to see you like that. You’re not going to become a whimpering mess, begging for cock, Blaine told himself, his eyes drifting to the door.

Moments later he was out of his chair. Blaine wasn’t sure how, but he could smell Wayden’s scent from where he was. The alpha’s scent wrapped around him, causing the fire he’d held at bay to turn into an inferno.

He was coming, Blaine thought, his heart hammering hard in his chest. He rubbed his suddenly sweaty hands over his thighs.

Wow, excited much, Blaine admonished himself. He dropped down into his chair and looked away from the door, as if he hadn’t been waiting for the alpha for the past two hours.

Wayden

“It’s going to come down hard,” Escala commented, looking up at the sky. The clouds were already turning a dark grey. Wayden nodded, following the alpha. Snow clung to his clothes and boots. The cold air burned his lungs as they made their final trek back. He was fucking exhausted, but it was worth it. Hunting and providing for everyone felt good… perfect, in fact. He’d felt invigorated as they’d run after their prey and made the first kill.

“You’re made for this life,” Escala said, slapping Wayden’s back. “After today, I won’t be able to see you as a scholar anymore.”

Wayden laughed. “Nah. It takes a strong alpha to do what you do. I can’t imagine myself taking care of so many people.” Wayden could barely make Ambrose happy. How in the hell would he take care of more than fifty people? Wayden looked around him at the content alphas and betas. And he wondered how Escala did it.

“You’re strong,” Escala said.

“No. That’s my brother.”

“You underestimate yourself.” Escala gave Wayden another pat and walked ahead of him. Wayden caught up with him.

“Speaking of being an alpha. The scent marking thing you do with your pack members; Blaine told me you said it’s to give them comfort and a sense of belonging.”

“Yes, that’s as best as I can explain it. But it’s far more complicated than that.”

“Do you get anything out of it?” Wayden asked, his fingers tingling from the memory of touching Blaine.

Escala was silent for a while, as if he was considering his question. “Why do you ask?” Escala stopped and turned to face him. The others walked past them, heading for home.

Uhhh… how did he answer that without revealing what had happened between him and Blaine? Though Wayden didn’t want to keep it a secret, there was just something so fragile about their relationship that he wanted to keep it to himself for a while. And Blaine was unpredictable. He didn’t know what the little devil would decide after his heat. Wayden paused when he realised what he’d been thinking.

Fuck.

In his mind it was a done deal. He was going to help Blaine with his heat. But the omega was yet to say yes.
