‘You’re gettingmarried? Are you sure about this? I know we haven’t talked for a while but this seems a bit sudden.’
‘You haven’t heard the half of it, mate. I toldyou things have been crazy—ever since Kate lost the baby...’
‘Whoa...’Matteo sat up with a jerk that nearly sent his laptop flying. ‘Kate waspregnant?’
‘I know. It’s a long story but it’s okay now. We’re going to try again. Made it harder on her that Georgia’s pregnant as well but—’
‘Cosa?’The knot in Matteo’s gut made it feel like he’d just been kicked. ‘Georgia’s pregnant?Howpregnant?’His heart skipped a beat as his mind flew in a totally crazy direction. She’d cheated on her boyfriend. Had she lied about it being a ‘safe’ time when he had taken her to bed himself?
‘I don’t know exactly...’ Luke was blinking as if he was surprised at Matteo’s interest. ‘But I saw her a couple of days ago and I’d guess at least six months. She’s got a pretty impressive bump.’
Matteo’s brainwas still processing information at the speed of light.
Six months? Atleast?
The competition had been about five months ago.
That would mean that Georgia had already been pregnant when she’d slept with him.
Had sheknown?
If she had, that made it far worse than simply cheating on someone.
‘You can ask her yourself,’ Luke said. ‘She’s going to be Kate’s bridesmaid, of course.’
Matteo’sjaw dropped. How could Luke actually be smiling at the prospect of him seeing Georgia again?
Because he didn’t know, he reminded himself. Matteo had never told anyone what had happened that night.
Maybe Georgia had never told anyone either. If she had, surely it would have been her best friend and Kate was about to be married tohisbest friend and that meant they wouldn’t have any secrets, didn’t it?
He certainly wouldn’t accept anything less than total honesty from someone he was about to promise to spend the rest of his life with.
But of course Georgia wouldn’t have confessed. What if her boyfriend had found out?
He was probably more than that by now. He would have married her the moment he’d found out he was going to be a father, wouldn’t he?
It was what he would do himselfwithout a moment’s hesitation. Family was sacred. Parents belonged with their children if it was at all possible and the bond had to be protected with everything you had.
Matteo didn’t want to know if Georgia Bennett was already married.
He didn’t want to see her again either. He’d believed he was completely over her now but this conversation had just flung open the mental door he’d thoughthe’d locked on that unfortunate blink of time in his life.
‘So you’ll come?’ Luke’s eyebrows rose hopefully. ‘And be part of the best day of my life?’
This was his closest friend, asking him to do something he’d vowed hewoulddo. He needed to get over himself, didn’t he?
And maybe it would be a good thing to see Georgia with her husband. With a baby on the way. Maybe then he could finallyforget about her. For ever...
‘I can’t make any promises,’ Matteo said slowly. ‘But I’ll see what I can do.’
