Just as we laid the last cups, a loud snort heralded the waking of our victim, and Dash gestured frantically at me to run for the back door while he went for the front. I nodded, wide-eyed, and swept my bag over my shoulder to run.
As I felt the impact of a suffocating powder and the slosh of cold water that followed, I realized two things. First, the back door was rigged, and second, Dash had double-crossed me.
The prick.
Oh, and thirdly.... I was now green from the waist up.
Fuck.
Chapter Seven
Lex
I applied the smallest touch of makeup to my face as my succubus crowed inside my chest. The invitation to a coffee date with the bartender from Flare had been waiting for me when I woke this morning, and she was convinced coffee was a euphemism for sex.
She wanted to ride the baloney pony.
I... had my doubts.
I was also extremely worried about how things would go if she chose to misbehave.
If a normal succubus could be likened to a Rottweiler, mine was a Labrador Retriever. Easily excited, super enthusiastic, but ultimately a bit of a ‘fraidy cat. My very human parents were strict during my developmental years, so I had little chance to hone those sexual instincts. When I left home and started building my own life, she continued to balk at any overly sexual situation. I had been worried there was something wrong with her until the other night when she had gone rogue on every man in sight.
Who knows, I thought as I fluffed my hair one last time and headed for the door, maybe succubi hit puberty at twenty-seven years old?
The day was already shaping up to be beautiful as I wandered the couple of blocks from our apartment building to Jewels Cafe. With no one around to see, I sent a small wave to the sold sign on my new shop three doors down.
Renovations started the following week, and to say I was excited was like saying chocolate was nice when Aunt Flo was visiting.
I shook my head in wonder at the comparison my mind went with and crossed through the cafe and out onto the balcony, overlooking the loch.
The water sparkled under the glare of the mid-morning sun, and I marveled at the blue and green tones that threaded through the water. There were several occupied tables outside, and I smiled as I saw Bas walking toward me. “Hi, Bas! Hi, August!” I said with a grin. Neph’s mate grimaced, while a voice from below his belt called, “Is that Alexandrite? Hi, Lex, how you doing?”
“I’m good, August. On a date.” Bas cringed while his talkative penis wished me luck.
I met both men during an interesting dance party a few weeks before Jewels Cafe officially opened. But that's another story. With a grin, I let them pass and cast about until my eyes landed on the man I came to meet.
When Tase insisted I give him my number last night, I admittedly thought he had been interested in me for himself, but apparently he wanted to hand it over to his friend, the bartender who didn’t appreciate a good cocktail innuendo.
Dion’s hair was a perfectly styled mess of blond strands that I wanted to run my fingers through, and I was woman enough to acknowledge how dry my mouth went at the way his t-shirt flexed over his bicep as he pushed his black frames up his nose.
Don’t embarrass yourself. Please don’t embarrass yourself,I chanted as I approached the table and slid into the vacant chair opposite him.
“Lex, right? Thanks for meeting me.”
He held his hand out to shake, as though we were in a business meeting. His nails were perfectly manicured, and from up close, his skin looked soft. I didn’t trust myself to make contact.
“Making sure you moan the right name later? Good idea.”
You had one job; I thought furiously at myself as he recoiled slightly and took his seat.
“This is —”
“A proposition for sex? Oh, I know. I’m counting on it.” I felt myself grinning and couldn’t stop it. I knew it was a bad idea to watch rom-coms with Colbie last week.
Someone please come and interrupt her long enough for me to take the reins on this shit show,I silently begged.
“I think we got off on the wrong foot,” Dion muttered and slid his chair back slightly.
